— Why the Light Was Hidden Above Until the Vessels Completed Their Mission

Section: The World of Nekudim (Openings 36–50)

TL;DR

This chapter explains why the Line cannot join with the Residue at the outset of Nekudim — and why the light is therefore initially hidden above. Two parts: (Part 1) The general foundation must receive its light through the Line joining with the Residue (Op. 27, 29). But first the vessel must be completed — because the whole reason for the Tzimtzum was to bring into existence a place for evil, so that evil could be rectified and ultimately become good. Eyn Sof's light must wait until the vessel completes its three-stage mission: producing evil, allowing evil to rule, being purified of it. The soul-body archetype anchors this. Body is coarse and contains evil; soul cleanses it; resurrection-of-the-dead is the model: the soul cannot join the body in perfect connection until after Adam's sin is worked through and the body completes its work in the earth. Death + resurrection. So with Line and Residue: the Line cannot join the Residue in a genuine bond until the Residue has brought forth all its evil and been purified. The objection — "so the light should only enter after purification?" — is answered by distinguishing entry from connection: light enters immediately but does not join until purification is complete. (Part 2) What actually happened: the light entered but could not join — it returned and became hidden above. Compare: the soul stands above in the Garden of Eden during the body's purification in the earth, while still radiating hevla degarmei — "the vapor of the bones" (forward-ref Op. 54). The hidden light is concealed in a pure place where the Other Side has no hold — a resting place (like a person taking refuge while waiting for a matter to conclude). Light re-enters at the time of the repair.

This chapter explains the withdrawal of the light. The previous chapters defined Nekudim's structure (Op. 36-40); now Op. 41 says: the lights came forth, found they could not join the vessels, and went back up. The chapter is the architectural pivot before Op. 42 ("light joins vessels per gradation"), Op. 46 ("the fall and breaking"), and Op. 47 ("repair from evil").

What this chapter is doing — two parts

Part 1 — Why the Line cannot yet join the Residue. Three claims: (a) the Tzimtzum's whole purpose is to make a place for evil so it can be rectified; (b) therefore the vessel must complete its mission — produce evil, rule, be purified — before the Line can join in a genuine bond; (c) the soul-body archetype, where soul cannot perfectly join body until after Adam's sin is worked through and resurrection arrives. The objection "should the light only enter after purification?" is answered: entry and connection are different — light enters immediately, but does not join yet.

Part 2 — What actually happened. Light entered but could not join; returned and became hidden above. The Garden of Eden / death-and-resurrection imagery. Hevla degarmei (Op. 54 forward-ref). Hidden light = sheltered in a pure place where the Other Side has no hold. Light re-enters at the time of the repair.

Paragraph 10 — Perfection reaches Line/Residue as light reaches soul-with-body; deficiencies-corrected as the proof

It is then evident that despite the great power of evil, it is one small matter that the Eyn Sof, blessed be He, wanted to display in order to demonstrate His perfection so that all existence may delight in Him through seeing the deficiencies that would exist were it not for the unity of His perfection and the repair accomplished by His perfect unity. Plain English: Analogy: perfection reaches Line/Residue just as the supreme light reaches the soul (after the body is repaired post-resurrection). The main thing = the unity = the Line — like a soul shining with all its lights in the body. The essential intent of the creation is literally this: if Adam had not sinned, his body would have been pure and it would have been rectified in a single moment.
