Opening 126
— The path of Daat's spread: descent, fixing, ascent

TL;DR

Op. 126 is the unit's closing chapter, and it answers the question Op. 124 and Op. 125 left open: by what path does Daat actually spread through Z"A? The chapter's answer is two-staged. Descent: Daat spreads first in its own center column, in its own vessel — Yesod of Imma — in just the same way as Chochmah and Binah spread in their own vessels. The vessel of Yesod of Imma has a unique structure — only one and a half joints, because its purpose is to reveal the lights. The top joint is clothed in the head of Z"A; Daat begins there, concealed. The second joint is the exit vessel (the category from Op. 32 & 34); Daat passes through it and gains the added aspect of being revealed. Then it continues down the center column of Z"A to the lowest level. Ascent: only after completing the descent does Daat return and ascend. ¶10 names the consequential fixing event: as long as Daat was still going down, Chochmah-Binah-Daat were not yet fixed in Z"A; the Mochin become a permanent fixture only when all of them have spread to all the joints. When Daat ascends, it encounters the Mochin already fixed in Z"A, and the Five Kindnesses of Daat then extend to them as well — the Kindnesses spread both horizontally (through Z"A's nine) and vertically (back up to the Mochin themselves). ¶7-8 install a second major doctrine: the Imma vs Abba asymmetry of Mochin. Imma's Mochin are differentiated into detail: the nine joints into which NHY divide enter one by one in each year of immaturity (citing Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem 8); detail is revealed during the years of Suckling up till 13 (First Maturity) and in the first two years thereafter. Abba's Mochin are general in nature: three overall Mental Powers in three years (ages 15-18); two encompassing lights by age 20. The whole chapter is about Imma's Mochin only — Abba's do not have this descent-ascent structure or the joint-by-joint count.

Chapter map

This is the third and closing chapter of the unit Daat of Z"A (Op. 124–126).

The Hebrew chapter heading is סדר התפשטות הדעתthe order of Daat's spreading-out. The word seder (סדר, order) is doing exact work: this chapter is about the ordered route by which Daat passes through Z"A's body.

What this chapter is doing — descent, fixing, ascent

A two-stage path. Op. 124 said Daat spreads; Op. 125 said it divides evenly. Neither chapter said along what route. Op. 126's central move is to name the route as a two-stage path — first descent, then ascent — with a fixing event between them.

Stage 1 — descent through Yesod of Imma. ¶3 names the path's beginning. Initially Daat must spread in its own center column and its own vessel — Yesod of Imma — in just the same way as Chochmah and Binah spread in their own vessels. The verb-shape is parallel: just as Chochmah spreads in its own vessel and just as Binah spreads in its own vessel, Daat spreads in its own vessel. The "own vessel" of Daat is Yesod of Imma. There is no asymmetry yet — at this first stage, all three Mochin are simply in their respective vessels, staying put.

The unique 1.5-joint vessel. Yesod of Imma has a structurally unique shape. Where Netzach and Hod each have three joints (the standard count for Sefirot of NHY), Yesod of Imma has only one and a half joints — because its purpose is to reveal the lights. The asymmetric shape of the vessel matches its asymmetric function: Yesod is the revelation-vessel, and its compact form is what makes the revelation possible. Initially the lights have to be within it, included there in the top joint of Yesod, which is clothed in the head of Z"A. In the second joint, the revelation takes place — this being one of the exit vessels discussed earlier in connection with the sensory organs (see Op. 32 & 34). The first joint contains (concealed); the second joint reveals (exit vessel). The half-joint is the transitional part — where containment becomes revelation.

Stage 2 — descent uncovered through the column. ¶4-5 name the next step. First come the beginnings of Daat, which in the rectified Z"A derives from Imma, and its place above lies in the upper joint of Yesod of Imma, which is in the head of Z"A. Daat begins concealed in the upper joint. Afterwards, when it spreads to reach another joint, it has the added aspect of being revealed — Daat has now passed through the second joint and gained the revealed aspect. Yet it nevertheless completes its own column — even after revelation, Daat first completes its passage down its own column (Z"A's center column, the column of the Mochin), to the lowest level. ¶5 reinforces: having gained the added aspect of being revealed, it first fulfills its own intrinsic functions in its own column. The descent is complete before the ascent begins.

The fixing event. ¶6 and ¶10 name the chapter's most consequential structural claim. The Mochin become fixed in Z"A only after Daat has completed its descent. ¶10's careful phrasing: as long as Daat was still going down, before completing its descent, Chochmah-Binah-Daat were not yet fixed in Z"A. For their presence indicates the way Imma rests over and influences Z"A, which intrinsically is only Six Directions, and this influence is not a permanent fixture in Z"A until all the Mental Powers have spread to all his joints. This is completed as soon as Daat has also completed its descent to the bottom of its own column. The logic is precise. Z"A intrinsically is only Six Directions. The presence of CHaBaD in Z"A is not native to him — it is Imma resting on him. For that resting to become a permanent fixture, all the Mental Powers must have spread to all his joints. Until Daat completes the descent, the spread is incomplete; the fixing has not occurred. Daat's descent is therefore the operational gate of the Mochin's permanence in Z"A.

Stage 3 — ascent and the extension of the Five Kindnesses. ¶9 and ¶10 close the path. Only after completing its own column does Daat ascend again. When it turns back to go up again, it encounters the Mental Powers already fixed in Z"A, and the Five Kindnesses of Daat then extend to them as well. The ascent is not a retreat — it is the operational phase that propagates the Five Kindnesses from Daat to the now-fixed Mochin. The Kindnesses, which Op. 125 named as the operational form of Daat's spread into Z"A's nine Sefirot, also extend into the Mochin themselves during the ascent. The Kindnesses' reach is therefore both downward (through the body) and upward (back to the Mochin in the head).

Imma's three columns over Z"A's nine. ¶6 names the spread-form of Imma's resting on Z"A. Imma's influence over Z"A divides into three columns which include all his nine Sefirot — which means that Imma influences all the different aspects of Z"A very evenly so as to be bound up with all his nine Sefirot, including the center column. The three columns of Imma's resting (right, left, center) include all nine of Z"A's Sefirot. Note the very evenly — Imma's resting is uniform, bound up with all nine. This is the structural counterpart of Op. 125's evenness-claim about Daat: Imma's resting is the substrate upon which Daat's even distribution becomes possible.

The Imma vs Abba asymmetry. ¶7-8 install a doctrine that frames everything else in the chapter and the unit. Imma's Mochin are characterized by their differentiation into detail. The detail-doctrine has a quantitative form: the nine joints into which NHY divide enter one by one in each year of immaturity. Imma's NHY each have three joints (Yesod has 1.5, but counted with the others) — nine joints total. Each year of immaturity sees one joint enter Z"A. The cited authority is Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem 8 — the Arizal's account of the Tzelem (the Mochin's array). The temporal staging: Each detail is revealed individually during the years of Suckling up till 13 — the time of First Maturity — and in the first two years thereafter. The unfolding window matches the developmental scheme of Op. 119-123.

Abba is different. Abba's Mochin are characterized by their general nature. ¶8: In the teachings relating to Abba there is no mention of the time of the entry of joints being governed by their number, nor of Daat of Abba extending through the body and returning up above as in the case of Imma. Two consequences follow: first, no joint-by-joint count for Abba; second, no descent-ascent for Abba's Daat. Both the staging mechanism (joint-by-joint) and the path (descent-ascent) are Imma's only. In the case of Abba the only differentiation is between the three overall Mental Powers, which enter in three years (between the ages of 15-18, after which Z"A receives the two encompassing lights of Abba by the age of 20). The numbers compress: Imma's nine joints across the suckling years; Abba's three Mochin across three later years; Abba's two encompassing lights by age 20.

Why the asymmetry. Op. 124's principle stands behind it: Abba is the more exalted father; his contribution is general because his level is too exalted to be differentiated into Z"A's specific joints. Imma is the proximate parent; her contribution is detailed because her level can be differentiated. The asymmetry of generality vs detail is operationally how Z"A receives both a detailed unfolding (from Imma) and a general clothing (from Abba) over the staged years.

The diagrams

Two diagrams capture the chapter's two big structural claims. The first diagram traces the descent-ascent path of Daat through the unique 1.5-joint Yesod of Imma down through Z"A's center column, the fixing of the Mochin, and the ascent with the Five Kindnesses extending to the Mochin. The second diagram contrasts the staging of Imma's Mochin (joint-by-joint, years 0-15) with the staging of Abba's Mochin (general, years 15-20).

Diagram 1 — The descent-ascent path of Daat

Read top to bottom, then bottom to top. Top: Yesod of Imma's upper joint — clothed in the head of Z"A; Daat is here concealed. Middle: Yesod of Imma's second joint — the exit vessel (Op. 32 & 34); Daat passes through and is revealed. Below: Daat continues down Z"A's center column, uncovered, to the lowest level (completing its own column). Then: Daat ascends — and at the moment it begins to ascend, the Mochin become fixed in Z"A. As Daat ascends, the Five Kindnesses extend to the now-fixed Mochin. The diagram's caption notes the chapter's most consequential claim: Mochin become fixed only when Daat completes its descent.

Paragraph 1 — Italic gloss / chapter title

Source — Hebrew (קל"ח פתחי חכמה):

סדר התפשטות הדעת:

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The spread of Daat through the body Plain English:

The chapter title names the chapter's task: explain the path by which Daat spreads through the body of Z"A. The Hebrew heading סדר התפשטות הדעתthe order of Daat's spreading-out — uses seder (סדר, order) to mark this as the chapter about the ordered route: not that Daat spreads (Op. 124's claim), nor how it divides (Op. 125's claim), but the path itself — descent through Yesod of Imma's two joints, completion of the center column, then ascent.

What this paragraph does. Italic gloss. Names the chapter's specific subject: the path / order of Daat's spread.

Paragraph 2 — The proposition

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The nature of Daat is to extend through the body, and when it descends uncovered and revealed, it does so in its own column first so as to fulfill its function there. We then say that the Mental Powers, through which Imma rests upon and directs Zeir Anpin, are fixed in him. Afterwards Daat ascends once more. By then Chochmah-Binah-Daat have already been fixed in Zeir Anpin and accordingly Daat ascends to that point. Plain English:

The whole chapter compressed. Five claims, in order. First: the nature of Daat is to extend through the body — Daat's function is spread, not stationary residence. Second: when it descends uncovered and revealed, it does so in its own column first so as to fulfill its function there — the descent has two qualities (uncovered, revealed) and a path-priority (own column first). Third: the Mental Powers, through which Imma rests upon and directs Z"A, are fixed in him — the Mochin become a permanent fixture in Z"A. Fourth: afterwards Daat ascends once more — the ascent follows the descent. Fifth: by then Chochmah-Binah-Daat have already been fixed in Z"A, and accordingly Daat ascends to that point — the ascent finds CHaBaD already fixed and reaches up to them.

What this paragraph does. States the chapter's whole proposition. Names descent uncovered → own column first → Mochin fixed → ascent → CHaBaD already fixed as the ordered structure of the path.

Paragraph 3 — Framing: from the that to the how

Source — Hebrew (קל"ח פתחי חכמה):

אחר שביארנו ענין הדעת שצריך להתפשט בכל ז"א, עתה נפרש דרך התפשטותו:

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Having discussed how Daat must extend through the whole of Zeir Anpin, we will now explain the path by which it spreads. Plain English:

The chapter's pivot. Op. 124-125 established that Daat extends through the whole of Z"A — and that its distribution is even (5/5) and that its evenness is what makes it the unique balance-attribute. Op. 126 now turns to the path. The shift is from fact-and-reason to route. The reader has been told what Daat does and why; now they are told the order in which it does it.

What this paragraph does. Frames the chapter as the zoom-in from the general account of Daat's spread (Op. 124-125) to the specific path of that spread.

Paragraph 4 — Yesod of Imma: 1.5 joints, top joint clothed, second joint exit vessel

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The nature of Daat is to extend through the body… This should be clear in the light of what has already been said about Daat. Initially Daat must spread in its own center column and its own vessel – Yesod of Imma – in just the same way as Chochmah and Binah spread in their own vessels. From there Daat must later spread along its own unique path, whereby it emerges from the vessel of Yesod of Imma and extends uncovered and revealed. Accordingly the vessel of Yesod of Imma from which Daat is revealed consists of only one and a half joints, because its purpose is to reveal the lights. Initially they have to be within it, included there in the top joint of Yesod, which is clothed in the head of Zeir Anpin. It is in the second joint that the revelation takes place, this being one of the exit vessels discussed earlier in connection with the sensory organs (see Openings 32 & 34). Plain English:

This is the chapter's most structurally dense paragraph. Five claims, layered.

First — the parallel start. Initially Daat must spread in its own center column and its own vessel — Yesod of Imma — in just the same way as Chochmah and Binah spread in their own vessels. The verb-shape is parallel across the three Mochin. Just as Chochmah spreads in its own vessel (which Op. 124 ¶12-13 names as the right column, clothed in Netzach of Abba), and just as Binah spreads in its own vessel (the left column, clothed in Hod of Imma), Daat spreads in its own vesselYesod of Imma. The staying-in-vessel mode of C&B (Op. 124 ¶12) is named as the model for Daat's first stage.

Second — the asymmetry. But Daat is not like C&B in totality. From there Daat must later spread along its own unique path, whereby it emerges from the vessel of Yesod of Imma and extends uncovered and revealed. C&B only stay-in-vessel; Daat also extends out. Daat's unique path begins only after the in-vessel stage. The unique path has two qualities: uncovered (Daat is no longer concealed in the vessel) and revealed (Daat is operationally manifest).

Third — Yesod of Imma's unique anatomy. Accordingly the vessel of Yesod of Imma from which Daat is revealed consists of only one and a half joints, because its purpose is to reveal the lights. The standard NHY structure has three joints per Sefirah; Yesod of Imma has only 1.5. The reason: its purpose is to reveal the lights. The compactness of the vessel is what makes the revelation possible — the vessel does not need three full joints of containment because its job is to let the lights out, not to hold them in. The 1.5-joint shape is therefore functionally aligned with the revelation function.

Fourth — the top joint, concealed. Initially they have to be within it, included there in the top joint of Yesod, which is clothed in the head of Z"A. The top joint contains Daat concealed. The top joint is also clothed in the head of Z"A — the hitlabshut-anatomy. Daat begins concealed within Yesod of Imma's top joint, which is itself inside Z"A's head.

Fifth — the second joint, revealed (exit vessel). It is in the second joint that the revelation takes place, this being one of the exit vessels discussed earlier in connection with the sensory organs (see Op. 32 & 34). The second joint is where revelation occurs. The cited category is exit vessels — vessels whose function is to reveal the lights — established in Op. 32 & 34 in the context of the sensory organs (eye, ear, nose, mouth — vessels whose function is to let out light, not to contain it). Yesod of Imma's second joint is one of those exit vessels. Daat passes through it and exits into the operational space of Z"A.

What this paragraph does. Names the path's beginning (own vessel, in just the same way as C&B). Names the asymmetry (Daat alone also extends out). Names Yesod of Imma's unique 1.5-joint anatomy. Names the top joint as the place of concealment, and the second joint as the exit vessel where revelation takes place.

Paragraph 5 — The order of the route

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The order is therefore as follows: First come the beginnings of Daat, which in the rectified Zeir Anpin derives from Imma, and its place above lies in the upper joint of Yesod of Imma, which is in the head of Zeir Anpin. Afterwards, when it spreads to reach another joint, it has the added aspect of being revealed, yet it nevertheless completes its own column. Afterwards it returns from there and goes up to spread completely through the entire structure of Zeir Anpin in a revealed way, as the proposition later states. Plain English:

The paragraph names the temporal ordering of the path. Three stages.

Firstthe beginnings of Daat, which in the rectified Z"A derives from Imma, and its place above lies in the upper joint of Yesod of Imma, which is in the head of Z"A. The origin: Daat's beginnings are from Imma, in the rectified Z"A (the operationally complete Z"A). The location: the upper joint of Yesod of Imma, in the head of Z"A. This is the starting state — Daat present but concealed in the upper joint.

Secondafterwards, when it spreads to reach another joint, it has the added aspect of being revealed, yet it nevertheless completes its own column. Daat now spreads to another joint — the second joint of Yesod of Imma, the exit vessel. At this point it gains the added aspect of being revealed. Note the added — revelation is additional to what Daat already had; the descent is enrichment, not loss. Yet it nevertheless completes its own column — even though Daat is now revealed, its first task is to complete its passage down its own column. The descent must reach the lowest level before any return movement begins.

Thirdafterwards it returns from there and goes up to spread completely through the entire structure of Z"A in a revealed way, as the proposition later states. Only after the descent is complete does Daat return upward. The ascent has its own purpose: to spread completely through the entire structure of Z"A in a revealed way. The revealed-spread is the operational form Op. 124 named — Daat extending throughout all of Z"A. ¶5 names the temporal precondition: this complete revealed spread happens only on the ascent, only after the descent is finished.

What this paragraph does. Names the path's temporal ordering: (1) beginnings concealed in Yesod of Imma's upper joint; (2) descent to second joint, gaining the added aspect of being revealed, completing its own column; (3) ascent to spread completely through Z"A in a revealed way.

Paragraph 6 — Descent uncovered: own column first

Source — Hebrew (קל"ח פתחי חכמה):

וברדתו מגולה - יורד לקו שלו מתחלה להשלימו שם, אחר שכבר נוסף בו גילוי בתחלה משלים עניניו בעצמו, שהוא הקו שלו:

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …and when it descends uncovered and revealed, it does so in its own column first so as to fulfill its function there. Having gained the added aspect of being revealed, it first fulfills its own intrinsic functions in its own column. Plain English:

The paragraph zooms in on the descent's priority. Two claims.

First — descent uncovered and revealed. The bolded source phrase: and when it descends uncovered and revealed, it does so in its own column first so as to fulfill its function there. Two operational qualities (uncovered, revealed) and a priority claim: own column first. Daat does not — at this stage — radiate outward into Z"A's right or left columns; it stays within the center column (the column of the Mochin) until its own column is complete.

Second — the reason. Having gained the added aspect of being revealed, it first fulfills its own intrinsic functions in its own column. Daat has gained the revealed aspect through passage through the second joint of Yesod of Imma; before radiating elsewhere, it must first complete its own intrinsic functions in its own column. The intrinsic functions: the operational tasks Daat is constitutively responsible for in the center column. The center column has its own work to be done — and Daat does that work first before any cross-column extension.

What this paragraph does. Names the descent's priority: own column first. Names the reason: Daat must fulfill its own intrinsic functions before extending elsewhere.

Concepts at play: daat_descends_uncovered_revealed, daat_spreads_in_own_column_first, daat_completes_own_column_before_ascending, daat, mochin, zeir_anpin, chapter_126_path_of_daat_spread_through_body.

Paragraph 7 — Mochin fixed in Z"A; Imma's three columns over nine Sefirot

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> We then say that the Mental Powers, through which Imma rests upon and directs Zeir Anpin, are fixed in him. Imma's influence over Zeir Anpin divides into three columns which include all his nine Sefirot – which means that Imma influences all the different aspects of Zeir Anpin very evenly so as to be bound up with all his nine Sefirot, including the center column. Plain English:

The paragraph names the consequence of Daat's descent: the Mochin become fixed in Z"A. Three claims.

First — the fixing event. The Mental Powers, through which Imma rests upon and directs Z"A, are fixed in him. The Mochin are fixed — established as a permanent fixture in Z"A. The wording is exact: through which Imma rests upon and directs Z"A — the Mochin are the means of Imma's resting and directing. To say the Mochin are fixed in Z"A is to say Imma's resting and directing presence is permanent.

Second — the three-column form. Imma's influence over Z"A divides into three columns which include all his nine Sefirot. Imma's resting takes the form of three columns (right, left, center). These three columns include all nine Sefirot of Z"A. The structural mapping: Imma's three columns over Z"A's nine Sefirot — three over three over three (the right column over Z"A's Chesed-Netzach-half, the left column over Gevurah-Hod, the center column over Tiferet-Yesod-Malchut, distributed by the standard column-anatomy).

Third — the evenness. Imma influences all the different aspects of Z"A very evenly so as to be bound up with all his nine Sefirot, including the center column. Note very evenly — the resting is uniform. Bound up with all his nine Sefirot — Imma's resting reaches every one of Z"A's nine. Including the center column — the center is not skipped, even though it is the Mochin's own column. This evenness-of-resting is the substrate on which Op. 125's evenness-of-Daat-distribution becomes operational: Imma rests evenly through three columns over nine Sefirot; Daat (the offspring of A&I via C&B) distributes its Five Kindnesses evenly across those nine.

What this paragraph does. Names the fixing event (Mochin fixed in Z"A as the Means of Imma's resting). Names the three-column / nine-Sefirot mapping. Names the very evenly quality of Imma's resting.

Paragraph 8 — Imma's Mochin: differentiated into detail; nine joints over nine years

Source — Hebrew (קל"ח פתחי חכמה):

והנה כל מה שאנו מדברים עתה הוא במוחין דאימא, שעניניהם בפרט,

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Everything we are presently discussing relates to the Mental Powers conferred by Imma, which are characterized by their differentiation into detail – and thus the Mental Powers conferred by Imma enter into Zeir Anpin in such a way that the nine joints into which Netzach-Hod-Yesod divide enter one by one in each year of immaturity (see Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem 8). Plain English:

The paragraph installs the chapter's first major doctrinal claim about the kind of Mochin under discussion.

First — the scope. Everything we are presently discussing relates to the Mental Powers conferred by Imma. The whole chapter — the descent-ascent path, the joint-by-joint analysis, the fixing event — is about Imma's Mochin only. Abba's Mochin will not be described this way.

Second — the character of Imma's Mochin. Characterized by their differentiation into detail. Differentiation into detail (pratiyut, פרטיות) is the operational signature of Imma's Mochin: they unfold in detail, one by one, joint by joint. The contrast (¶9): Abba's Mochin are general (klaliyut, כלליות), unfolding as a whole.

Third — the staging mechanism. Thus the Mental Powers conferred by Imma enter into Z"A in such a way that the nine joints into which Netzach-Hod-Yesod divide enter one by one in each year of immaturity. The arithmetic: NHY are three Sefirot, each with three joints (Yesod's 1.5-joint anomaly aside, the standard count is 3+3+3 = 9). Each joint enters Z"A in one year of immaturity. Nine joints across nine years of immaturity. Each detail revealed individually — the unfolding is precisely not simultaneous; the staging is what makes Imma's contribution detailed.

Fourth — the citation. Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem 8. The Arizal's Tree of Life, Gate of the Investigations of the Tzelem, chapter 8 — the canonical Lurianic locus for the Tzelem's structure (the encompassing Mochin and their year-by-year unfolding). This is also the source Op. 127 will explicitly cite when it opens the next unit on the Tzelem.

What this paragraph does. Restricts the scope of the chapter to Imma's Mochin. Names differentiation into detail as Imma's operational signature. Names the joint-by-joint, year-by-year staging mechanism. Cites Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem 8.

Paragraph 9 — Abba's Mochin: general in nature; three in three years; encompassing lights by 20

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> This is not so in the case of the Mental Powers conferred on Zeir Anpin by Abba, which are characterized by their general nature. Thus in the teachings relating to Abba there is no mention either of the time of the entry of joints being governed by their number or of Daat of Abba extending through the body and returning up above as in the case of Imma. In the case of Abba the only differentiation is between the three overall Mental Powers, which enter in three years (between the ages of 15-18, after which Zeir Anpin receives the two encompassing lights of Abba by the age of 20). This is not so in the case of the Mental Powers conferred by Imma, where each detail is revealed individually during the years of Suckling up till 13 – time of the First Maturity – and in the first two years thereafter. Plain English:

This paragraph completes the Imma vs Abba asymmetry doctrine. Five claims.

First — Abba's character. The Mental Powers conferred on Z"A by Abba are characterized by their general nature. Where Imma's Mochin are detailed (¶8), Abba's are general (klaliyut). The two parents contribute Mochin of fundamentally different operational granularity.

Second — what is missing for Abba. In the teachings relating to Abba there is no mention either of the time of the entry of joints being governed by their number, or of Daat of Abba extending through the body and returning up above as in the case of Imma. Two consequences. First: no joint-by-joint count for Abba — the staging mechanism of ¶8 does not apply. Second: no descent-ascent of Abba's Daat — the chapter's central path-claim (¶3-6, ¶10-11) is Imma's only. Abba's Daat does not descend uncovered through Z"A's column and return; that is unique to Imma's Mochin.

Third — Abba's staging. In the case of Abba the only differentiation is between the three overall Mental Powers, which enter in three years (between the ages of 15-18). Abba's contribution has three Mochin (Chochmah-Binah-Daat, but at the general level), entering across three years, ages 15-18. The compression is dramatic compared to Imma's nine-joints-over-nine-years detail. Abba contributes the whole of each Mochin at once, year by year.

Fourth — Abba's encompassing lights. After which Z"A receives the two encompassing lights of Abba by the age of 20. Beyond the three Mochin (entering 15-18), Abba contributes two encompassing lights (the makifim of Abba) — completing by age 20. The Tzelem's encompassing aspect — which Op. 127 will name as the lamed-mem of the Tzelem — comes specifically from Abba.

Fifth — Imma's window restated. This is not so in the case of the Mental Powers conferred by Imma, where each detail is revealed individually during the years of Suckling up till 13 — the time of First Maturity — and in the first two years thereafter. The temporal window for Imma's detailed unfolding: Suckling till 13 (First Maturity, the standard developmental milestone established in Op. 121) plus the first two years thereafter (i.e., to age 15). Imma's detailed contribution completes just before Abba's general contribution begins (15-18). The two parents' contributions are temporally consecutive — Imma fills years 0-15, Abba fills years 15-20.

What this paragraph does. Names Abba's general-character signature. Names what is missing from Abba's account (no joint-by-joint, no descent-ascent). Names Abba's three-Mochin / three-years (15-18) staging. Names the two encompassing lights of Abba by age 20. Re-anchors Imma's window (suckling to 13, plus two years).

Paragraph 10 — Daat ascends

Source — Hebrew (קל"ח פתחי חכמה):

ואחר כך חוזר מלמטה למעלה, כי הנה רק אחר שהשלים הקו שלו, אז חוזר ומתעלה, שזה מראה שהוא דבר הנעשה אחר ירידת כל המדרגות:

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Afterwards Daat ascends once more. Only after completing its own column does Daat ascend again. The ascent of Daat thus takes place only after it has gone down to the lowest level. Plain English:

The paragraph zooms in on the ascent's precondition. Two claims.

First — the ascent is conditional. Only after completing its own column does Daat ascend again. The ascent is not free; it requires that Daat has completed its own column (the descent through Z"A's center column to the lowest level). This is the precise temporal logic: descent first, then ascent.

Second — the ascent reaches after the lowest level. The ascent of Daat thus takes place only after it has gone down to the lowest level. Daat must have reached the lowest level before ascending. There is no truncated descent; the descent is complete before the return begins. The structural shape of the path is therefore full descent → reversal → full ascent — not a partial descent followed by an interrupting ascent.

What this paragraph does. Names the ascent's two preconditions: completion of the column and descent to the lowest level.

Concepts at play: daat_ascends_after_descent_complete, daat_completes_own_column_before_ascending, daat, mochin, chapter_126_path_of_daat_spread_through_body.

Paragraph 11 — CHaBaD fixed; Five Kindnesses extend to the Mochin

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> By then Chochmah-Binah-Daat have already been fixed in Zeir Anpin… As long as Daat was still going down, before completing its descent, Chochmah-Binah-Daat were not yet fixed in Zeir Anpin. For their presence indicates the way Imma rests over and influences Zeir Anpin, which intrinsically is only Six Directions, and this influence is not a permanent fixture in Zeir Anpin until all the Mental Powers have spread to all his joints. This is completed as soon as Daat has also completed its descent to the bottom of its own column. When it turns back to go up again, it encounters the Mental Powers already fixed in Zeir Anpin, and the Five Kindnesses of Daat then extend to them as well. …and accordingly Daat ascends to that point. Plain English:

The chapter's closing paragraph and its most consequential structural claim. Five clauses, building one on the next.

First — the temporal logic of the fixing event. As long as Daat was still going down, before completing its descent, Chochmah-Binah-Daat were not yet fixed in Z"A. The Mochin's fixing in Z"A is deferred throughout the entire descent. While Daat is descending, the fixing has not yet happened.

Second — the structural reason. For their presence indicates the way Imma rests over and influences Z"A, which intrinsically is only Six Directions. The reasoning is precise. Z"A intrinsically is only Six Directions — six Sefirot (Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod), the standard vav-katzavot of Z"A. CHaBaD in Z"A is not native; it is Imma resting on him. The presence of CHaBaD therefore indicates a non-native fact — that Imma has come to rest. For that resting to become a permanent fixture, it must be complete.

Third — the completion condition. This influence is not a permanent fixture in Z"A until all the Mental Powers have spread to all his joints. This is completed as soon as Daat has also completed its descent to the bottom of its own column. The completion condition: all Mochin spread to all joints. This requires Daat's descent to be complete. Daat's descent is therefore the operational gate of the Mochin's permanence in Z"A. Until Daat finishes, the resting is incomplete; once Daat finishes, the fixing is achieved.

Fourth — the ascent encounters the fixed Mochin. When it turns back to go up again, it encounters the Mental Powers already fixed in Z"A. The ascent does not cause the fixing; the completion of the descent causes the fixing, and the ascent follows — encountering Mochin that are already fixed. The structural ordering: descent → fixing → ascent. The fixing is between the two stages.

Fifth — the Five Kindnesses extend to the Mochin. The Five Kindnesses of Daat then extend to them as well.

The closing source phrase: and accordingly Daat ascends to that point — i.e., to the level of the now-fixed CHaBaD.

What this paragraph does. Names the fixing event's temporal logic (Mochin not fixed until Daat completes descent). Names the structural reason (Z"A intrinsically is only Six Directions; CHaBaD's presence indicates Imma resting; permanence requires all Mochin to spread to all joints). Names the ascent's encounter with the fixed Mochin. Names the extension of the Five Kindnesses to the Mochin during the ascent.

Synthesis — what Op. 126 contributes to the project as a whole

Op. 126 closes the Daat of Z"A unit (Op. 124-126) by naming the path. Op. 124 named that Daat spreads (and why Daat alone does); Op. 125 named how it divides (5 against 5, evenly through Daat's distinctive balance-attribute); Op. 126 now names along what route. The route is two-staged — first descent, then ascent — with a fixing event between them.

The descent is the chapter's first structural contribution. Daat begins concealed in the upper joint of Yesod of Imma (which is itself clothed in the head of Z"A). It passes through the second joint of Yesod of Imma — the exit vessel (the category from Op. 32 & 34) — and gains the added aspect of being revealed. It then continues down its own column (Z"A's center column, the column of the Mochin) to the lowest level. Throughout the descent, Daat first fulfills its own intrinsic functions in its own column — no cross-column extension yet. The vessel's anatomy is named with precision: Yesod of Imma has only one and a half joints, because its purpose is to reveal the lights. The compactness of the vessel matches its revelation function — it does not need three full joints because it is not primarily a containment vessel; it is a let-out vessel.

The fixing event is the chapter's most consequential structural claim. ¶11: as long as Daat was still going down, before completing its descent, Chochmah-Binah-Daat were not yet fixed in Z"A. The reasoning is precise. Z"A intrinsically is only Six Directions. The presence of CHaBaD in Z"A is not native to him — it is Imma resting on him. For that resting to become permanent, all the Mental Powers must have spread to all his joints. This requires Daat's descent to be complete. Daat's descent is therefore the operational gate of the Mochin's permanence in Z"A. The Mochin do not become fixed during the descent; they become fixed at the moment the descent is finished.

The ascent propagates the Five Kindnesses back to the now-fixed Mochin. ¶11: when it turns back to go up again, it encounters the Mental Powers already fixed in Z"A, and the Five Kindnesses of Daat then extend to them as well. Op. 125 named the Five Kindnesses as Daat's operational form spread into Z"A's nine Sefirot (5/5 distribution); Op. 126 now adds: the Five Kindnesses also extend up to the Mochin themselves. The Kindnesses' reach is both downward (Op. 125) and upward (Op. 126). This is the chapter's quiet extension of the operational picture.

The chapter's second major doctrinal contribution is the Imma vs Abba asymmetry of Mochin. Imma's Mochin are differentiated into detailthe nine joints into which NHY divide enter one by one in each year of immaturity (citing Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem 8). Abba's Mochin are general in natureno mention of joint-by-joint count or descent-ascent of Daat; three overall Mental Powers in three years (ages 15-18); two encompassing lights by age 20. The temporal scheme: Imma's detail spans years 0 to 15 (suckling till 13, plus two years more); Abba's general contribution spans years 15 to 20. The two parents' contributions are temporally consecutive. The chapter's whole path-account is Imma's only — Abba's Daat does not descend uncovered and return.

The Imma-detail / Abba-general asymmetry is operationally consequential. Z"A receives both a detailed unfolding (from Imma, joint by joint) and a general clothing (from Abba, three Mochin plus two encompassing lights). The detail makes Z"A's concrete operational structure possible (each joint operationally distinct, each year of suckling adding one joint); the general makes Z"A's encompassing identity possible (the Tzelem, the three-Mochin form). The next unit (Op. 127-130) will explicitly take up the Tzelem (citing the same Lurianic locus, Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem) and will use Op. 126's distinction between the inner (NHY-style) and the encompassing (lamed-mem) Mochin.

For the larger book arc: Op. 126's path-doctrine (descent through Yesod of Imma → fixing → ascent with Five Kindnesses extending to the Mochin) is the canonical operational shape of Daat's behavior. The fixing event (Mochin permanent only after Daat's descent completes) is one of the most consequential doctrines about Z"A's complete maturation. The Imma-detail / Abba-general asymmetry frames every later chapter that distinguishes the two parents' contributions to Z"A's Mochin.

For the unit: Op. 124-125-126 together give the Daat of Z"A doctrine in three layers — what Daat is (the offspring; the pnimiyut), how it divides (5/5, evenly), along what path (descent-fixing-ascent). The unit closes here.

Self-review notes

What was checked. The 11 paragraph blocks match the 11-paragraph source JSON for chapter_126.json. The pre-flight reports offset_hint: italic_gloss (first JSON paragraph starts with ), so MD has the same count as JSON (11). P1 → he[0] (italic gloss); P11 → he[10] (closing exposition with bolded …and accordingly Daat ascends to that point). All English source quotes are taken verbatim from source_processed_he/chapter_126.json. Hebrew will be inserted by the project's Hebrew-insertion utility after rendering.

The two diagrams (descent_ascent_path and imma_vs_abba_mochin) capture the chapter's two big structural claims. No raw > characters appear in HTML labels in the DOT sources.

Citations: Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem 8 — cited in ¶8 — is the standard Lurianic locus on the Tzelem (the encompassing Mochin), and is the same source Op. 127 explicitly cites at the head of the next unit. Op. 32 & 34 are cited in ¶4 for the exit vessels category in connection with the sensory organs; the cross-reference is internal and matches the source's parenthetical.

Tentative or unresolved. None substantive. The chapter is structurally clean: a path claim (descent-ascent) with a fixing event (Mochin permanent only after Daat's descent), and a parenthood-asymmetry claim (Imma-detail vs Abba-general) that frames everything else. The temporal scheme (years 0-13 suckling/First Maturity, 13-15 two-years-thereafter, 15-18 Abba's three Mochin, age 20 Abba's two encompassing lights) is consistent with Op. 119-123's developmental account.

Voice / style notes. Aryeh Kaplan voice maintained throughout: short paragraphs, second-person address (read this carefully, the verb-shape is parallel), Hebrew terms introduced with first-appearance treatment (seder, pratiyut, klaliyut, makifim, vav-katzavot), no editorial enthusiasm, no mystical-poetic register. The chapter's central pedagogical move (descent-ascent path with the fixing event between them) is named as such in the chapter map's What this chapter is doing subsection. The Imma-detail / Abba-general doctrine is surfaced both in the chapter map and in ¶8-9.

Foreshadowing. The chapter forecasts Op. 127 (the Tzelem doctrine — explicitly cited via Etz Chayim, Shaar Derushey HaTzelem). The connections to Op. 1, Op. 5–6, Op. 32 & 34, Op. 70, Op. 95–107, Op. 110–114, Op. 115, Op. 116, Op. 117, Op. 119–123, Op. 121, Op. 124, Op. 125 are cited.

Looking ahead — grounded foreshadowing

Op. 126 closes the Daat unit with the spread of Daat through the body — the operational mechanism by which Daat performs its bridging function. Forecasts Op. 32, 34.
