Section: Building of Zeir Anpin in Pregnancy, Suckling and Maturity (Openings 119–123)

TL;DR

Op. 121 is the unit's durational anchor. It pins down the temporal extent of each stage — pregnancy is nine months, suckling lasts until thirteen years and one day, maturity follows thereafter — and names a 24-month subperiod of suckling during which Hod-Yesod-Malchut complete a purification they could not finish in pregnancy. Its central pedagogical move is the built vs. revealed distinction. The ARI's writings appear to contradict themselves about what gets repaired in pregnancy: Etz Chayim, Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem says NHY in pregnancy and CGT in suckling, while Etz Chayim, Shaar RaPaCh says CHaBaD-CGT-Netzach in pregnancy with HYM still to be cleansed. Op. 121's resolution: all ten Sefirot are built (sorted, birur'd, purified) during pregnancy, but only Netzach-Hod-Yesod are revealed. Both ARI teachings are correct at different levels — built and revealed are not the same thing. The chapter then deploys the same distinction to resolve a second apparent problem: if suckling is named after what enters (CGT after birth, CHaBaD after 24 months), suckling should be only 24 months — but the ARI says it is thirteen years. The resolution: periods are named after what is repaired, not what is entering. CGT are complete at the moment of birth; the whole period from birth to age 13 is therefore called suckling/CGT. CHaBaD are complete at 13y+1d; the period from then on is therefore called gadlut/CHaBaD. Part 3 of the chapter (¶25–31) addresses the 24-month subperiod and grounds the incomplete purification of HYM in Niddah 30b (embryo three within three), Lamentations 1:13 (the wordplay of DaVaH / HOD), Bava Kama 92a (because of the nettle the cabbage is hit — Hod's flaw darkens Netzach), and Zohar Pinchas 252a (Netzach and Hod as the two Messiahs). ¶28 supplies a structural reason why HYM was deliberately left incomplete: of the two supports (Netzach and Hod), one is complete and the other is not, so that the world, while having a place for flaws, will not be destroyed.

Chapter map

This is the third chapter of the unit Building of Z"A in Pregnancy, Suckling and Maturity (Op. 119–123). Op. 119 opened the unit with the together-growth claim; Op. 120 gave the general overview with the parallel ladder. Op. 121 is nominally about pregnancy in detail, but its argument expands to cover the durations of all three stages and the 24-month subperiod of suckling — because the resolution of the two ARI contradictions requires the whole timeline to be in view at once.

The Hebrew chapter heading is בנין ז"א בזמני עי"מthe building of Z"A in the times of EYM (Eybur-Yenikah-Mochin). The word בזמני (bi-zmaney, in the times of) is doing real work: this chapter is about the temporal extents and what completes when. Hold this in mind as you read.

What this chapter is doing — built vs. revealed, and the durations

Two apparent ARI contradictions. ¶6 names the first apparent contradiction. Etz Chayim, Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem chs 1–3 says NHY are repaired in pregnancy and CGT in suckling. Etz Chayim, Shaar RaPaCh chs 5–6 says CHaBaD-CGT-Netzach are repaired in pregnancy with HYM still to be cleansed. These cannot both be literally true at the same level. The chapter then names a second apparent problem (¶14): if suckling is the period during which CGT enter (gradually, after birth) and CHaBaD then begin to enter at 24 months, then suckling proper should end at 24 months and a separate stage should run from 24 months to 13 years. But the ARI's own teachings name the entire 0-to-13-years span as suckling.

The resolving distinction: built vs. revealed. Op. 121 introduces a distinction that resolves both contradictions in one move. Built (the Hebrew is birur, sorting/purification from the World of Desolation) and revealed are two different things. All ten Sefirot are built during pregnancy. The ARI teaching that says CHaBaD-CGT-Netzach are repaired with HYM still to be cleansed is correct at the built level — all ten Sefirot's birur takes place in pregnancy, but HYM's exit from the desolation is incomplete (¶25). The ARI teaching that says NHY in pregnancy, CGT in suckling is correct at the revealed level — only NHY are operationally revealed in pregnancy; CGT are revealed at birth; CHaBaD are revealed at 13y+1d (¶7-12).

The same built vs. revealed distinction resolves the second contradiction (¶14-20). Periods are named after what is repaired (i.e., complete, in fixed possession), not after what is entering. At the moment of birth, CGT are complete (in fixed possession, be-keviut); the entire 13-year suckling period is therefore named CGT. At 13y+1d, CHaBaD are complete; the period from then on is therefore named gadlut/CHaBaD. The fact that CHaBaD start to enter at 24 months and continue entering until 13 years does not require a separate named stage — the naming tracks completion, not entry.

The durations. The chapter pins down the temporal extents. Pregnancy is nine months. Suckling extends until thirteen years and one day. Maturity begins at thirteen years and one day. Within suckling, the first twenty-four months are a special subperiod during which HYM finally complete the purification they could not complete in pregnancy.

Why durations differ — gradation determines time. Part 2 (¶22-24) extracts a general principle. The 9 months of pregnancy and the 13 years of suckling are not arbitrarily chosen and need not be of equal length. The gradual, stage-by-stage developmental process determines the time periodthe stages in any given case depend on factors intrinsic to that case. The principle is general: wherever we find a time period specified for some given process, we know that this is the gradation required because of the intrinsic nature of the aspect involved (¶24).

HYM's incomplete exit and its meaning. Part 3 (¶25-31) addresses why HYM did not fully exit the desolation in pregnancy. ¶26 grounds the answer in Lamentations 1:13 — the verse "faint all the day" uses the word DaVaH (דוה), whose letters are HOD (הוד) reversed. HYM are the Sefirot most ready to be flawed and severely darkened through human deeds. The world itself shows the same pattern: it has emerged from desolation (it has been created and is no longer tohu va-vohu), but its legs are not repaired — it has no support and totters time after time. ¶27 brings Bava Kama 92a: "because of the nettle the cabbage is hit" — when one leg is flawed, the other suffers too. Netzach is darkened because of Hod. ¶27 also brings the Zohar Pinchas 252a identification of Netzach and Hod as the two Messiahs — the two leg-supports of the messianic structure of redemption.

Why HYM was deliberately left incomplete. ¶28 supplies a structural-teleological reason. CGT are the body of the Partzuf; Netzach and Hod are its supports (the legs that give the body the ability to stand); Yesod and Malchut are the channels through which influence is conveyed to the lower worlds. Of the two supports, one is complete and the other is not, so that the world, while having a place for flaws, will not be destroyed. Hod's incompleteness is the structural condition under which the world can have a place for human deeds — flaws and repairs alike — without falling into destruction.

The diagrams

One diagram captures the chapter's built vs. revealed timeline: pregnancy builds all 10 Sefirot but reveals only NHY; birth reveals CGT; the first 24 months of suckling complete HYM purification; suckling continues until 13 years (with CHaBaD entering gradually); maturity at 13y+1d marks CHaBaD's completion.

Diagram 1 — Built vs. revealed across the timeline

Read left to right. Pregnancy (9 months): all 10 Sefirot built via birur from the World of Desolation, but HYM exit is incomplete; only NHY are revealed (head and chest folded three-within-three, Niddah 30b). Birth: CGT revealed (the embryo's bonds released; arms spread). First 24 months of suckling: HYM purification completes (the secondary birur). Suckling continues to 13 years: CHaBaD enter gradually over CGT; the period is named CGT/yenikah because periods are named by what is repaired, not by what is entering. Maturity (13y+1d): CHaBaD complete; Z"A is now called gadol.

> Completion of Zeir Anpin during Pregnancy, Suckling and Maturity Plain English:

The italic gloss names the chapter's scope. The Hebrew chapter heading בנין ז"א בזמני עי"מthe building of Z"A in the times of EYM (pregnancy, suckling, maturity) — sharpens it: בזמני (bi-zmaney, in the times of) signals that this chapter pins down the durational extent of each stage. The English gloss says completion — and the chapter will explain what completes when: NHY at start of pregnancy, CGT at birth, HYM (purification) at 24 months, CHaBaD at 13y+1d.

What this paragraph does. Italic gloss. Names the durational completion theme.

Paragraph 2 — The proposition (Part 1)

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> From the outset Zeir Anpin was built as Ten Sefirot through the binding together of the Mental Powers over the Six Directions – for they did not radiate in this way in the World of Desolation. Zeir Anpin is then described as being in fixed possession of Netzach-Hod-Yesod, while the others still need to be revealed in actuality. The entire period of Pregnancy is a process of gradual preparation to enable Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet to be revealed. Immediately on coming forth from Imma, Zeir Anpin is in fixed possession of Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet, and we say that Chochmah-Binah-Daat are in the process of coming. Plain English:

Part 1 of the proposition compresses the chapter's central structural claim. From the outset (the start of pregnancy), Z"A was built as Ten Sefirotthrough the binding together of the Mental Powers over the Six Directions. The state thus achieved did not obtain in the World of Desolation, where Z"A consisted of only the Six Directions (the Vav-Katzavot, ו"ק) without bound-in Mochin. The Mochin-binding is constitutive: it is what makes Z"A a 10-Sefirah Partzuf rather than a 6-Sefirah entity.

Then: Z"A is then described as being in fixed possession of NHY, while the others still need to be revealed in actuality. The phrase in fixed possession (be-keviut, בקביעות) is precise — it means securely possessed, operationally available. NHY are in fixed possession in pregnancy; CGT and CHaBaD are not yet revealed but will be. The proposition then states the dynamic: the entire period of Pregnancy is a process of gradual preparation for CGT to be revealed. At the moment of birth, CGT are in fixed possession; CHaBaD are in the process of coming. The structure of the chapter — three named stages, each defined by what is in fixed possession — is set out at once.

What this paragraph does. States Part 1 of the proposition. Names the fixed-possession sequence: NHY at start of pregnancy → CGT at birth → CHaBaD coming.

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> To repair Netzach-Hod-Yesod so that Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet can be revealed over them requires the entire period of Pregnancy. And to repair Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet so that Chochmah-Binah-Daat may be revealed over them requires the entire period of Suckling, for they are thus steadily drawn down in stages in the necessary way. Yet even so, the initial purification is not truly complete until the first twenty-four months of Suckling, because only then is the purification of Hod-Yesod-Malchut complete. Plain English:

Parts 2 and 3 of the proposition. Part 2: the durational claim — the whole of pregnancy is what is needed to repair NHY for CGT-revelation; the whole of suckling (which extends to 13 years) is what is needed to repair CGT for CHaBaD-revelation. Part 3: the 24-month subperiod claim — the initial purification is not truly complete until 24 months into suckling, when HYM finally complete their purification.

Notice the parallel structure of Part 2: each stage's repair takes the entire duration of that stage. This will become important in ¶22-24, where Ramchal extracts the general principle: gradation determines time; each process takes the time intrinsic to its own gradation.

The framing paragraph names the chapter's pivot from Op. 120's general overview to a fuller discussion of the three periods. The Hebrew (עתה נבוא לבאר תשלום זמנים אלה) literally says we now come to explain the completion of these times — using תשלום (tashlum), completion/payment, the same root as שלם (shalem, complete/whole). The chapter's task is to specify what completes when.

Paragraph 6 — Part 1 phrase 1: the apparent ARI contradiction

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 1: From the outset Zeir Anpin was built as Ten Sefirot… Two apparently contradictory teachings are found in the writings of the ARI of blessed memory. In one place it states that during Pregnancy Netzach-Hod-Yesod are repaired, while Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet are repaired during Suckling (Etz Chayim, Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem chs 1-3). Elsewhere, however, it states that during the Pregnancy it is Chochmah-Binah-Daat, Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet and Netzach that are repaired – leaving Hod-Yesod-Malchut still to be cleansed (Etz Chayim, Shaar RaPaCh chs 5-6). Plain English:

Ramchal opens Part 1 by naming a problem. The ARI's writings appear to contradict themselves about what gets repaired in pregnancy. Etz Chayim, Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem chs 1-3 says NHY in pregnancy and CGT in suckling. Etz Chayim, Shaar RaPaCh chs 5-6 says CHaBaD-CGT-Netzach in pregnancy with HYM still to be cleansed. These cannot both be literally true at the same level: the first names the body-level division (NHY/CGT/CHaBaD by stage) we already saw in Op. 119-120; the second names a cleansing-level division (everything except HYM is repaired in pregnancy).

The chapter's task in ¶7-12 will be to show that both are correct — at different levels of analysis. The first describes what is revealed; the second describes what is built/cleansed.

What this paragraph does. Names the apparent ARI contradiction that the chapter will resolve.

Paragraph 7 — The resolution: two things had to happen

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> To resolve this apparent contradiction, it must be understood that two things had to happen with respect to Zeir Anpin. The first is that Zeir Anpin had to be built on all his levels – i.e. as a structure of Ten Sefirot – through the process of sorting and purification (בירור, birur) from the World of Desolation, as explained in the preceding Opening. (The second thing that had to happen – the successive revelation of these already-built levels in the course of Pregnancy, Suckling and Maturity – will be addressed presently.) Plain English:

Ramchal supplies the resolution as a two-things-had-to-happen analysis. First, Z"A had to be built on all his levels — as a structure of Ten Sefirot — through birur (sorting and purification) from the World of Desolation. This is the cleansing-level claim, the one Shaar RaPaCh makes. Second, these already-built levels had to be revealed progressively across pregnancy, suckling, and maturity. This is the body-level claim, the one Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem makes. The two ARI teachings are correct at different levels. The built vs. revealed distinction is the chapter's master move.

A note on terminology. Birur (בירור) is the Lurianic technical term for the sorting/purification process by which Z"A's Sefirot exit the desolation of the post-breakage state and become operational. It is not the same as revelation — birur is the structural condition that makes revelation possible; revelation is the operational unfolding of the already-built structure.

What this paragraph does. Supplies the built vs. revealed distinction. Names two things that had to happen — the structural framework for resolving both the ARI contradiction here and the suckling-duration problem in ¶14-20.

Paragraph 8 — Built as 10 Sefirot via Mochin-binding

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus having initially in the World of Desolation consisted of only the Six Directions, Zeir Anpin was now from the very outset of the repair – the beginning of the Pregnancy – built as Ten Sefirot …through the binding together of the Mental Powers over the Six Directions – for they did not radiate in this way in the World of Desolation. It is now that Zeir Anpin becomes complete with the full complement of Ten Sefirot, because the Mental Powers are bound up with the body, which was not the case at first. Plain English:

Ramchal explains the proposition's phrase through the binding together of the Mental Powers over the Six Directions. In the World of Desolation, Z"A consisted of only the Six Directions (the Vav-Katzavot, ו"ק) — the six body-Sefirot CGT-NHY without the Mochin (CHaBaD) bound in. The pregnancy-birur changes this. From the very outset of the repair, Z"A is built as Ten Sefirotthe Mental Powers are bound up with the body. The Mochin-binding is constitutive: it is what makes Z"A a 10-Sefirah Partzuf rather than a 6-Sefirah entity. This is a sharper claim than "Z"A's body grew from NHY through CGT to CHaBaD"; it says the very identity of Z"A as a 10-Sefirah Partzuf depends on the Mochin's being bound to the body.

A note on the Six Directions. The Vav-Katzavot (literally six extremities) are the six directional Sefirot — Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod — corresponding to the six spatial directions (up, down, north, south, east, west) and to the six letters of the Tetragrammaton when read with this organization. In the World of Desolation, this is what Z"A was; the binding of the upper three Mochin transforms him into the full 10-Sefirah Partzuf.

What this paragraph does. Explains the Mochin-binding phrase. Names the six-direction-to-ten-Sefirah transformation that constitutes Z"A's Partzuf identity.

Paragraph 9 — What is revealed ≠ what has been repaired

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Nevertheless, what is revealed of his Sefirot during the Pregnancy is not what has been repaired. All the Ten Sefirot are repaired from the effects of the desolation, although Hod, Yesod and Malchut still remain to be repaired completely. However, what is revealed in Zeir Anpin during the Pregnancy is only Netzach-Hod-Yesod. Plain English:

The chapter's central structural claim, in its sharpest form. What is revealed of his Sefirot during pregnancy is not what has been repaired. All ten Sefirot are repaired from the desolation in pregnancy — even though HYM still remain to be repaired completely (the 24-month subperiod will finish them). But what is revealed — what is operationally manifestis only NHY.

The two adjectives — repaired and revealed — describe two distinct facts about the same Sefirot. CGT, for instance, are repaired in pregnancy (their birur is done) but not revealed (they are folded behind NHY three-within-three). The two ARI teachings of ¶6 each capture one of these two facts; neither is wrong.

What this paragraph does. States the built vs. revealed distinction in its sharpest one-sentence form.

Paragraph 10 — Argument: birur of all 10 must happen in pregnancy

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> This is clearly the case, because it must be that all the Sefirot are sorted and purified during the Pregnancy. We cannot resolve the contradiction by saying that although Hod-Yesod-Malchut of the overall Netzach-Hod-Yesod still remain to be purified, it is the rest of the Sefirot of the overall Netzach-Hod-Yesod that were purified during the nine months of Pregnancy. For if so, when does the purification of the other Sefirot – i.e. the overall Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet and Chochmah-Binah-Daat of Zeir Anpin – take place? And indeed we see with our own eyes here in the world below that the entire building of the human body is completed during pregnancy. Plain English:

Ramchal anticipates and rejects an alternative resolution. One might try to reconcile the two ARI teachings by saying: Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem's NHY-in-pregnancy refers to the bottom of NHY (the HYM piece of NHY that's not purified) and the rest of NHY (the upper part of NHY) is what's actually purified. This would mean that nine months of pregnancy purifies only NHY, leaving CGT and CHaBaD's purification for later. But — when does that purification take place? There is no later stage devoted to body-Sefirot purification; suckling and maturity are about revelation, not birur. So the alternative resolution fails.

The human-form anchor strengthens the argument. We see with our own eyes here in the world below that the entire building of the human body is completed during pregnancy. Limbs, organs, all the parts come into existence during human pregnancy; suckling expands what was built. By the structural-anatomical parallel, Z"A's birur of all parts must happen in pregnancy too.

What this paragraph does. Argues by elimination that the birur of all 10 Sefirot must happen in pregnancy. Reinforces with the human-form anchor.

Paragraph 11 — NHY revealed; embryo three-within-three (Niddah 30b)

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Rather, as we have said, the sifting and selection of all the Ten Sefirot of Zeir Anpin takes place during the Pregnancy, but what is revealed in that period is a different matter. For Netzach-Hod-Yesod are revealed during the Pregnancy, while the rest still remain to be revealed.
(Summary: The sorting and purification of all the Ten Sefirot is carried out during the Pregnancy, even though the repair of Hod-Yesod-Malchut is deficient. Nevertheless, only Netzach-Hod-Yesod are revealed during Pregnancy – for the embryo is "like a folded tablet, with only his legs visible" – Niddah 30b, "three within three".) Plain English:

Ramchal restates the resolution. The sifting and selection of all the Ten Sefirot is carried out during pregnancy, even though HYM's repair is deficient. Only NHY are revealed during pregnancy. The summary then grounds the only-NHY-visible claim in Niddah 30b: the embryo is "like a folded tablet, with only his legs visible". The Talmudic image is the human embryo bent up in the womb, its head and chest folded inward, its legs alone visible at the bottom of the folded posture. Ramchal's three-within-three (sheloshah betoch sheloshah) names the three folded-in triplets (head, chest, legs) of which only one (legs = NHY) is visible.

This is the chapter's most important external citation. The Talmudic anchor (Niddah 30b) places the structural claim about Z"A's pregnancy in fixed correspondence with the human embryo's anatomy. The same folded tablet shape applies on both levels — Z"A in the World of Desolation's recovery and the human in the womb.

What this paragraph does. Restates the built vs. revealed resolution. Anchors the only-NHY-visible claim in Niddah 30b (embryo three-within-three).

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Zeir Anpin is then described as being in fixed possession of Netzach-Hod-Yesod, while the others still need to be revealed in actuality. This should be clear in the light of what I have written. Plain English:

Ramchal closes the built vs. revealed discussion by tying the proposition's phrase — Z"A in fixed possession of NHY, while the others still need to be revealed — back to the resolution. In fixed possession (be-keviut, בקביעות) means securely possessed and operationally available. NHY are in fixed possession in pregnancy; CGT and CHaBaD exist as built but await revelation.

Paragraph 13 — Phrase: entire pregnancy = preparation for CGT revelation

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The entire period of Pregnancy is a process of gradual preparation little by little to enable Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet to be revealed. Zeir Anpin possesses Netzach-Hod-Yesod immediately but this is not to say that they are complete, for to be complete they must have Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet revealed over them. The entire period of the Pregnancy is a process of preparation towards this. The reason is because it is impossible for there to be any less than Netzach-Hod-Yesod, and we must therefore say that Netzach-Hod-Yesod are present from the start of the Pregnancy, even though they are not complete until its end. During the Pregnancy, Netzach-Hod-Yesod are steadily prepared to receive Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet at the time of birth. Plain English:

Ramchal explains the proposition's phrase the entire period of pregnancy is a process of gradual preparation. NHY are present from the start of pregnancy — it is impossible for there to be any less than NHY — but they are not complete until pregnancy's end. Their completion requires CGT to be revealed over them; the whole nine-month duration is the preparation for that revelation.

A subtle point. NHY are present throughout pregnancy, but they are not complete until pregnancy's end. Completion requires the next layer (CGT) to be revealed. So complete in this Klach context is not a static notion — it is in-relation-to-the-next-revelation.

What this paragraph does. Explains the gradual preparation phrase. NHY present throughout pregnancy; CGT-revelation is what completes NHY.

Paragraph 14 — Apparent problem: suckling's length

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> This enables us to resolve an apparent problem in the teachings of the ARI of blessed memory. For the full period of Suckling (יניקה, yenikah) is defined as continuing until the age of thirteen years – only then is Zeir Anpin called mature (גדול, gadol). But that is the time when Chochmah-Binah-Daat complete their entry, not when they start to come. If so it would seem that Zeir Anpin should be called mature immediately after the first twenty-four months of Suckling, for that is when Chochmah-Binah-Daat start to enter. Plain English:

Ramchal names a second apparent problem. The ARI defines suckling as continuing until thirteen years (only then is Z"A called gadol). But thirteen years is when CHaBaD complete their entry, not when they start. If so — if periods are named by what enters — Z"A should be called gadol immediately after the 24 months of suckling, when CHaBaD start entering. The ARI's stated definition is at odds with the entry-based naming.

The problem is structurally analogous to the first problem (¶6) and will be resolved by the same built vs. revealed logic: periods are named by what is repaired, not by what is entering.

What this paragraph does. Names the second apparent problem (suckling's length).

Paragraph 15 — Wrong proposal

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> However we cannot say that this is the correct order – that "Pregnancy" applies to the entire period from the beginning of Netzach-Hod-Yesod until their completion while "Suckling" lasts only from the start of Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet until their completion (i.e. from birth until the conclusion of the first twenty-four months of Suckling), with "Maturity" being from the start of Chochmah-Binah-Daat – at twenty-four months – until their completion at thirteen years. Plain English:

The wrong proposal that Ramchal will refute: each named stage runs from the start of one triplet's entry to its completion. Pregnancy = NHY entry-to-completion. Suckling = CGT entry-to-completion (i.e., 0–24 months only). Maturity = CHaBaD entry-to-completion (i.e., 24 months to 13 years). This is the entry-based naming hypothesis.

Paragraph 16 — Reason 1 against: would need a 4th period

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> We cannot define Suckling and Maturity in this way for three reasons: (1) If Maturity is defined as beginning at the conclusion of twenty-four months of Suckling, which is when Chochmah-Binah-Daat start to enter, there would have to be a fourth period after thirteen years, when Chochmah-Binah-Daat are complete. The period of Suckling would then be defined as lasting only for the first twenty-four months and Maturity until thirteen years, while the ensuing period would have to be called by a different name. Plain English:

Reason 1: the entry-based naming forces a fourth, unnamed period. If maturity ends at 13 years (when CHaBaD complete entry), what to call the period thereafter? The Lurianic scheme has only three named stages — pregnancy, suckling, maturity — so the entry-based proposal violates the standard nomenclature.

What this paragraph does. First reason against the wrong proposal.

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> (2) This is not what we find in the teachings of the ARI of blessed memory. Rather the term Suckling applies until thirteen years and one day. Plain English:

Reason 2: simple textual fact. The ARI's writings define suckling as extending until thirteen years and one day. The entry-based proposal contradicts the ARI directly.

What this paragraph does. Second reason against the wrong proposal.

Concepts at play: suckling_until_thirteen_years, apparent_contradiction_in_ari_resolved_by_built_vs_revealed, chapter_121_built_vs_revealed_and_durations.

Paragraph 18 — Reason 3 against: child spreads arms at birth

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> (3) If we were to define Suckling and Maturity as above, we would have to say that Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet begin to enter from birth and only complete their entry at twenty-four months, just as Chochmah-Binah-Daat start to enter at twenty-four months and complete their entry at thirteen years. However, here in the world below we see with our own eyes that this is not so. For the embryo is released from the bonds in which he was bent up in his mother's belly "three within three" immediately on emergence from the womb. The baby spreads his arms and legs at once, and thus we see that Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet are already complete at birth without needing the first twenty-four months of Suckling. Plain English:

Reason 3: the human-form anchor again. If CGT only complete their entry at 24 months (per the entry-based proposal), the human baby's CGT-anatomy (the chest with its arms) should also only complete at 24 months. But we see with our own eyes that this is not so. The baby spreads his arms and legs at once on emergence from the womb. CGT are already complete at birth; the entry-based proposal is anatomically wrong.

The argumentative pattern recurs: Ramchal grounds the metaphysical claim in observable human-anatomical fact. The child spreads arms at birth fact is the empirical anchor; from it follows that CGT must be complete at birth in Z"A too.

What this paragraph does. Third reason against the wrong proposal: anatomical fact rules it out.

Paragraph 19 — The right view

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Rather we must say that Netzach-Hod-Yesod come at the beginning of the Pregnancy, as soon as the embryo has taken its form forty days after conception. Just as we see that a person's mental powers of Chochmah-Binah-Daat develop gradually in childhood until he attains full Daat at the age of thirteen (thus becoming liable for his actions), similarly, throughout the period of Pregnancy Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet enter gradually and then, at the very moment of birth, they become revealed completely. Plain English:

The correct view. NHY come at the beginning of pregnancy, as soon as the embryo has taken its form — forty days after conception. (The forty days is a halakhic anchor from Niddah: an embryo is considered formed at forty days.) Throughout pregnancy, CGT enter gradually, and at the very moment of birth they are revealed completely. The parallel with human cognitive development is then made explicit: just as a person's CHaBaD develop gradually in childhood until full Daat at 13 (when one becomes bar mitzvah, liable for one's actions), Z"A's CGT enter gradually in pregnancy until completion at birth.

A pedagogical note. The mention of full Daat at thirteen, thus becoming liable for his actions is a reference to the halakhic bar mitzvah age. The Lurianic scheme of Z"A's stages is isomorphic with the halakhic stages of a person's responsibility — forty days for embryo formation, birth, 24 months of nursing, 13 years for bar mitzvah. The operational parallel is precise.

What this paragraph does. Names the correct view: NHY at start of pregnancy (40 days post-conception); CGT enter gradually in pregnancy and complete at birth; CHaBaD enter gradually in suckling and complete at 13.

Paragraph 20 — 24 months for HYM, full Mochin at 13, periods named by what is repaired

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> What was built during the Pregnancy is completed during the first twenty-four months of Suckling, this being the period of the purification of Hod-Yesod-Malchut. (As discussed below, although a child has legs at birth, he is unable to walk until later.) From the conclusion of these twenty-four months until thirteen years, Chochmah-Binah-Daat begin to enter, but the entire period from birth until thirteen years – Suckling (יניקה, yenikah) and childhood (קטנות, katnut) – is called that of Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet. For these are revealed at birth and during this period become increasingly ready to receive Chochmah-Binah-Daat over them. Then at Maturity, Chochmah-Binah-Daat enter completely, and accordingly the period after thirteen years is called Maturity (גדלות, gadlut.) Thus the proposition goes on to state: Plain English:

The full timeline now visible. What was built in pregnancy is completed during the first 24 months of suckling — this is the HYM purification subperiod. The aside a child has legs at birth but cannot walk until later anticipates ¶26: HYM are present (legs exist) but not yet operational (cannot walk) until the 24-month subperiod completes their birur.

From 24 months until 13 years, CHaBaD begin to enter, but the entire period from birth until 13 years is called CGT/yenikah/katnut. The naming-rule is now stated explicitly: periods are named by what is revealed at the start of the period, not by what is entering during it. CGT are revealed at birth; the whole 13-year subsequent period is called CGT. CHaBaD complete at 13 years; the period thereafter is called gadlut/CHaBaD.

A note on Hebrew terms. Yenikah (יניקה, suckling) and katnut (קטנות, childhood, literally smallness) together name the entire 0-to-13 period. The technical term katnut in Lurianic literature picks out the constricted state of the Mochin (Op. 116 ¶10), which here gets a temporal gloss: katnut is the suckling period before maturity.

What this paragraph does. Lays out the full timeline: 24-month subperiod for HYM; 13 years for full suckling; gadlut from 13y+1d. Names periods by what is revealed-and-repaired, not by what is entering.

(To summarize: The different periods are not named after what is under repair but rather after what has already been repaired. At the beginning of the Pregnancy Netzach-Hod-Yesod are complete, and accordingly the entire Pregnancy is called Netzach-Hod-Yesod. At the moment of birth, Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet are complete, and accordingly the entire period of Suckling until thirteen years is called Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet. At thirteen years the repair of Chochmah-Binah-Daat is complete, and the ensuing period is therefore called Maturity, גדלות, gadlut and Chochmah-Binah-Daat.) Plain English:

Ramchal closes Part 1 with the explicit summary statement of the naming rule: The different periods are not named after what is under repair but rather after what has already been repaired. The full timeline:

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 2: To repair Netzach-Hod-Yesod so that Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet can be revealed over them requires the entire period of Pregnancy. Just as the thirteen years and one day are explained as the time needed for Chochmah-Binah-Daat to enter over Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet, similarly the nine months of Pregnancy are the time of preparation for Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet to enter over Netzach-Hod-Yesod. The two periods do not need to be of equal lengths, because in each case the time involved depends on the needs of the process. Plain English:

Part 2 opens with the durational claim. Pregnancy's nine months are the time of preparation for CGT to enter over NHY — analogous to the thirteen years that prepare CHaBaD to enter over CGT. The two periods need not be of equal lengths. The principle: the time involved depends on the needs of the process. Each gradation has its own intrinsic time-extent.

(The term Suckling here refers to the entire period of thirteen years until Maturity.) Plain English:

The durational claim for suckling. The entire period of sucklingthe entire 13 years until maturity — is what is needed to repair CGT for CHaBaD-revelation. This is the ARI's stated mystery of the 13 years and one day. The parenthetical clarifies the technical use of suckling in this context: it covers the whole 0–13 span, yenikah and katnut together.

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …for they are thus steadily drawn down in stages in the necessary way. It is the gradual, stage-by-stage developmental process that determines the time period. The stages in any given case depend on factors intrinsic to that case and the time involved is measured according to that specific gradation. As a general rule, wherever we find a time period specified for some given process, we know that this is the gradation required because of the intrinsic nature of the aspect involved. Plain English:

Ramchal extracts a general principle from the durational analysis. The gradual, stage-by-stage developmental process determines the time period. The principle generalizes: wherever we find a time period specified for some given process, we know that this is the gradation required because of the intrinsic nature of the aspect involved. So 9 months and 13 years are not arbitrarily chosen — they are the intrinsically required gradations for the respective revelations.

This is one of Klach's broadly applicable methodological principles. Whenever the Lurianic scheme assigns a specific number — a specific count of years, months, ascents, descents, repairs — that number reflects an intrinsic gradation of the process. The principle will recur in many later chapters.

What this paragraph does. States the general principle: gradation determines time. Time periods are not arbitrary; they reflect intrinsic process-gradations.

Paragraph 25 — Part 3 phrase 1: HYM did not fully exit desolation

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 3: Yet even so, the initial purification is not truly complete… This refers to the actual sorting out and purification of the Sefirot of Zeir Anpin from the World of Desolation. However there is a difference between the process of purification in the Pregnancy and that during Suckling. Initially, in the World of Desolation, destruction held sway and did not allow the levels – the Sefirot – to endure. All the levels of Zeir Anpin emerged from this during the time of the Pregnancy, when he was built as Ten Sefirot, except that Hod-Yesod-Malchut did not emerge completely from ruin. Not that they remained in a literal state of ruin, but they did not complete their exit. For this reason they exist but they cannot carry out their function properly. Plain English:

Part 3 opens with the qualified version of the all-ten-built claim. All the levels of Z"A emerged from the desolation in pregnancy, when he was built as Ten Sefirotexcept that HYM did not emerge completely. They are not in a literal state of ruin (they're not still in the desolation), but they did not complete their exit. They exist but cannot carry out their function properly.

The two qualifications are precise. Not in literal ruin — this is not a regression to pre-pregnancy state. Did not complete the exit — they are partly in the post-desolation state but partly still bearing the marks of the desolation. The result: they exist (NHY's lower three exist, in a structural sense) but they cannot function properly. Function requires complete exit; HYM in the post-pregnancy state lack the operational completion.

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Likewise we see that a child has legs but he cannot walk. What is meant by saying that Hod-Yesod-Malchut were not entirely purified during Pregnancy is that these Sefirot were the most ready to become flawed and severely darkened through men's deeds, as explained in various places in connection with the verse "faint all the day" (Lamentations 1:13), where the letters of the Hebrew word for "faint", דוה, DaVaH, spell out the word HOD backwards. Plain English:

The human-form anchor again. A child has legs but cannot walk. The legs exist but they cannot yet function properly — exactly the state of HYM at the moment of birth. The 24 months of suckling are the period during which the legs (HYM) gain the capacity to walk (function properly).

Ramchal then grounds the HYM most subject to flaw doctrine in Lamentations 1:13: faint all the day — the verse describes the daughter of Zion fainting all day under the weight of her wounds. The Hebrew word for faint is DaVaH (דוה). Read its letters backwards: ה-ו-ד = HOD. The wordplay grounds the doctrine HYM are the most ready to be flawed and darkened through human deeds in a precise verbal exegesis: daily faintness is HOD reversed.

The deeper claim: HYM (especially Hod) are the Sefirot most directly affected by human deeds. When humans sin, they specifically flaw and darken HYM; when they perform mitzvot, they specifically repair HYM. This is why HYM's purification was deliberately left incomplete in pregnancy: it is the operational point at which human action makes its difference.

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus we see that this world has also already emerged from desolation in the sense that it has been created and is no longer "desolation and void". It is just that its "legs" have not been repaired and therefore it has no support and totters time after time. And the sages said, "Because of the nettle the cabbage is hit" (Bava Kama 92a) – which alludes to the way Netzach too becomes darkened because of the flaw in Hod. Thus the various flaws that exist now in the world all cause a flaw in Hod and darken Netzach. The legs exist – the Torah and commandments exist – but they cannot go – there is no strength in them. Plain English:

Ramchal applies the structural insight to the world. The world has already emerged from desolation — it has been created and is no longer "desolation and void" (the tohu va-vohu of Genesis 1:2). But its legs have not been repairedit has no support and totters time after time. The exile, the suffering, the long history of human imperfection are the world's legs that exist but cannot walk.

Two further citations sharpen the picture. Bava Kama 92a: "Because of the nettle the cabbage is hit" — when one plant is harmed, the neighbouring plant is too. Netzach is darkened because of the flaw in Hod. The various flaws in the world all cause a flaw in Hod and darken Netzach. So the world's instability propagates structurally: human deeds flaw Hod; Hod's flaw darkens Netzach; together NH cannot support.

A further dimension. Netzach and Hod are the two Messiahs (Zohar Pinchas 252a) — the two messianic figures (Mashiach ben Yosef and Mashiach ben David, in the standard tradition) are Netzach and Hod. The repair of HYM is therefore also the messianic repair — the legs become operational, the world can walk, redemption proceeds. This requires a separate process of purification in addition to the first. The 24-month subperiod's secondary birur is, in microcosm, the messianic structure of redemption.

The closing image is striking. The legs exist — the Torah and commandments exist — but they cannot go — there is no strength in them. Torah and mitzvot are the legs of the world — the means by which the world walks. Until HYM are fully repaired, the legs are present but the strength is not. The repair is not yet complete.

What this paragraph does. Applies the HYM-incomplete doctrine to the world's condition. Cites Bava Kama 92a (nettle/cabbage) and Zohar Pinchas 252a (two Messiahs). Identifies HYM's secondary birur as the messianic structure of redemption.

Paragraph 28 — Structural reason: one support complete, one not

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> This mode of government must be understood as one in which all the rest of the Partzuf is complete except for the supports that give it the ability to stand. For Chessed-Gevurah-Tiferet are the body of the Partzuf while Netzach and Hod give it support and Yesod and Malchut channel the influence to the lower worlds. Of the two supports, one is complete but the other is not. This is so that the world, while having a place for flaws, will not be destroyed. (For this reason Hod is still not completely repaired and as a result Netzach is also subject to flaws, because when one leg is flawed the second leg also cannot function properly.) This is also bound up with the various exiles – the main period of exile was in the fifth millennium corresponding to Hod. The flaw in Hod affects Yesod and Malchut, through which the influence is channeled. Netzach and Hod are the secret of the two Messiahs, as stated in the Zohar (Pinchas 252a). This requires a separate process of purification in addition to the first. Plain English:

Ramchal supplies the structural-teleological reason for HYM's deliberate incompleteness. The Partzuf has three operational layers in its lower half:

Of the two supports, one is complete (Netzach) and the other is not (Hod). Why?so that the world, while having a place for flaws, will not be destroyed. Hod's incompleteness is the structural condition under which the world can have a place for human deeds — flaws and repairs alike — without the world's complete destruction.

The exile-historical gloss is pointed. The main period of exile was in the fifth millennium, corresponding to Hod. The medieval Jewish exile (roughly 4000–5000 from Creation, ~240 CE to 1240 CE) is the historical period that operationally manifests Hod's incompleteness. The flaw in Hod affects Yesod and Malchut, the channels of influence — so the exile is also a period of diminished divine influence reaching the world. Netzach and Hod are the two Messiahs (Zohar Pinchas 252a, repeated). The messianic figures are the two leg-supports — and their repair is the structural condition of redemption.

A small interpretive note. The reference to the fifth millennium corresponding to Hod maps the seven-millennium scheme of Jewish history (with each millennium associated with a Sefirah, Chesed–Gevurah–Tiferet–Netzach–Hod–Yesod–Malchut) onto the operational scheme of the Partzuf. The fifth millennium = Hod = exile-period.

What this paragraph does. Supplies the structural-teleological reason for HYM's incompleteness. Names the deliberate one-complete-one-not pattern as the condition for the world to have a place for flaws without being destroyed. Maps onto Jewish historical exile.

Paragraph 29 — Phrase: initial purification not truly complete

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus indeed …the initial purification is not truly complete… Although at first sight it would appear that the entire purification was complete, nevertheless this is not so – because a faint trace of the desolation still exists: Hod-Yesod-Malchut have still not emerged completely from the desolation. Plain English:

Ramchal closes the chapter by tying the proposition's phrase — the initial purification is not truly complete — back to the structural account. At first sight it would appear that the entire purification was complete (since Z"A is built as 10 Sefirot in pregnancy). Nevertheless this is not soa faint trace of the desolation still exists. HYM have still not emerged completely from the desolation.

The phrase faint trace (in the Hebrew, רושם דק, roshem dak) is technical: it means a residual mark, something barely there but still present. HYM exit almost completely in pregnancy, but a faint trace remains. The 24-month subperiod removes that trace.

What this paragraph does. Names the proposition phrase. Specifies the faint trace of desolation still in HYM at end of pregnancy.

Paragraph 30 — Phrase: until 24 months of suckling

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …until the elapse of twenty-four months of the period of Suckling… The fact that the child still suckles from his mother shows clearly that he is still in need of the flow of outside influence and still requires repair and purification. And thus in the world below the newborn baby has to develop his innate powers, and this he does during suckling. Plain English:

The proposition's phrase about the 24-month subperiod is grounded in the human-form anchor once more. The fact that the child still suckles from his mother shows clearly that he is still in need of the flow of outside influence — the child is not yet self-sufficient. He still requires repair and purification. The 24 months of suckling are precisely the period during which the child develops his innate powers — anatomically grows, becomes able to walk, becomes self-sufficient enough to no longer need nursing.

The structural correspondence is exact. The child's suckling = ongoing purification; Z"A's 24-month subperiod = secondary birur of HYM. The two are the same operational pattern applied at the human and Z"A levels.

What this paragraph does. Grounds the 24-month subperiod in the human-form anchor (the child's suckling).

Paragraph 31 — Phrase: HYM purification complete at 24 months

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …because only then is the purification of Hod-Yesod-Malchut complete. Plain English:

The closing phrase. Only at the elapse of 24 months of suckling is the purification of HYM complete. The chapter closes with the precise temporal anchor: 24 months marks HYM's full exit from the desolation. From that point on, HYM operate properly — the child can walk; Z"A's HYM channel influence with their full intrinsic power.

What this paragraph does. Closes the chapter. Names the temporal anchor: HYM purification complete at 24 months.

Synthesis — what Op. 121 contributes to the project as a whole

Op. 121 is the unit's durational anchor and the chapter that introduces the built vs. revealed distinction.

The chapter's central pedagogical contribution is the built vs. revealed distinction (¶7-12). Two ARI sources appear to contradict each other about what gets repaired in pregnancy: Etz Chayim, Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem says NHY only; Etz Chayim, Shaar RaPaCh says CHaBaD-CGT-Netzach with HYM still to be cleansed. The resolution: all ten Sefirot are built (birur'd) during pregnancy, but only NHY are revealed. The two ARI teachings are correct at different levels of analysisbuilt and revealed are not the same. The same distinction resolves the second apparent problem (¶14-21): if periods are named by what enters (CGT after birth, CHaBaD after 24 months), suckling should be only 24 months. But periods are named by what is repaired, not by what is entering. CGT are complete at birth; the entire 13-year period is therefore named CGT/yenikah/katnut. CHaBaD are complete at 13y+1d; the period from then on is gadlut/CHaBaD.

The chapter's durational contribution is in Part 2 (¶22-24). Pregnancy is 9 months, suckling is until 13 years and one day, maturity is thereafter. The two periods need not be of equal lengths. Each gradation has its own intrinsic time-extent. The principle generalizes: wherever we find a time period specified for some given process, we know that this is the gradation required because of the intrinsic nature of the aspect involved.

The chapter's substantive structural contribution is in Part 3 (¶25-31). HYM did not fully exit the desolation in pregnancy; the first 24 months of suckling complete their exit (the secondary birur). The human-form parallel anchors this: a child has legs but cannot walk until later. The Lamentations 1:13 wordplay (DaVaH / HOD) names HYM as the Sefirot most ready to be flawed and darkened through human deeds. The Bava Kama 92a image ("because of the nettle the cabbage is hit") names how Hod's flaw propagates to Netzach. The Zohar Pinchas 252a identification of Netzach and Hod as the two Messiahs names the messianic significance of the secondary birur. ¶28 supplies the structural-teleological reason: of the two supports, one is complete and the other is not, so that the world, while having a place for flaws, will not be destroyed. The deliberate incompleteness of Hod is the structural condition of the world's having a place for human deeds — and the period of exile (the fifth millennium) is the historical-operational manifestation.

For the next chapters: Op. 122 will work suckling in detail; Op. 123 will work maturity in detail. Both will deploy the built vs. revealed and periods named after what is repaired logic supplied here.

Self-review notes

What was checked. The 31 paragraph blocks match the 31-paragraph source JSON. P1 maps to he[0] (italic gloss), P31 maps to he[30] (closing phrase) under the italic_gloss offset. All English source quotes are taken verbatim from source_processed_he/chapter_121.json, including the tagged formatting (bold and italic markers). Hebrew will be inserted by tools/insert_hebrew_into_analysis.py. The diagram (built_vs_revealed) shows the timeline with built/revealed labels and 24-month subperiod; it does not contain raw > characters in HTML labels.

External citations preserved. The chapter contains four external citations from the source: Etz Chayim, Shaar Pirkey HaTzelem chs 1-3 (¶6); Etz Chayim, Shaar RaPaCh chs 5-6 (¶6); Niddah 30b (¶11, "embryo three within three"); Lamentations 1:13 (¶26, the DaVaH / HOD wordplay); Bava Kama 92a (¶27, "because of the nettle the cabbage is hit"); Zohar Pinchas 252a (¶27 and ¶28, "two Messiahs"). All are quoted verbatim from the source's English paragraphs and are not invented.

Tentative or unresolved. The reference to the fifth millennium corresponding to Hod (¶28) is given a brief gloss in the analysis as the medieval exile period. This seven-millennium-Sefirah mapping is a standard Lurianic doctrine but the analysis does not develop it further; later chapters may revisit it.

Voice / style notes. Aryeh Kaplan voice maintained throughout: second-person address (think of a baby), short paragraphs, concrete anchors (the child has legs but cannot walk), Hebrew terms introduced with first-appearance treatment (birur, be-keviut, DaVaH, Vav-Katzavot, yenikah, katnut, gadlut, gadol, bar mitzvah), no editorial enthusiasm, no mystical-poetic register. The chapter uses the words built, revealed, repaired with consistent technical precision.

Foreshadowing. The chapter forecasts Op. 122 (suckling) and Op. 123 (maturity) as the per-stage chapters. The connections to Op. 119 (together-growth, Z"N-disconnection cause), Op. 120 (general overview, parallel ladder), and Op. 116 ¶6 (Mochin as A&I's grafting) are cited.

Looking ahead — grounded foreshadowing

Op. 121 grounds the cycle's temporal anchors: 9 months pregnancy; 24-month subperiod for HYM; 13 years for full suckling; maturity from 13y+1d.
