Section: Atik and Arich Anpin link Atzilut with Adam Kadmon (Openings 96–100)

TL;DR

Why is human service necessary at all, and how does Atik specifically transmit it into the eternal reward? The chapter's answer turns on an asymmetry inside the structure: only the BaN branch was broken; only there was evil rooted; therefore the lower creations emerged from BaN carrying damage, and therefore human service (the repair of MaH and BaN through human deeds) is the whole operational content of the cyclical six thousand years. The other branches — the AHP radiations from AK's face, themselves the lights of AV and SaG — require no repair; they radiate in the World of Reward, raising the lower creations one thousand years per ascent through the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth millennia, after which everything is fixed forever. Atik is the transfer-level: outside Atzilut (its first three Sefirot stand above Atzilut), connected upward with what is above (because Atik is Malchut of AK), and as head of Atzilut relating to the world of service below. The chapter ends with the single original intention the entire architecture serves — that the lower creations attain everything through merit and not through charity (be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah). Without service, the radiance would be a gift; with service, it is a reward; and only Atik, as the foundation of the MaH-BaN balance, can fix the radiance of the upper branches to the deeds of the lower man.

Chapter map

This is the third chapter of the unit Atik and Arich Anpin link Atzilut with Adam Kadmon (Op. 96–100). Op. 96 gave the structural picture; Op. 97 gave the purposive picture; Op. 98 gives the operational picture — how the carrying-of-deeds-into-eternity is concretely performed. The chapter follows Klach's standard tripartite structure: proposition (¶2–3), parts announcement (¶4), exposition (¶5–13 for Part 1; ¶14–21 for Part 2). The proposition divides into two halves. Part 1 (¶2): until MaH and BaN everything was in repair; in BaN was the damage; in MaH the repair; they had to be given a place to do their work; the lower creations rise through the branches of AK to the end of all ascents. Part 2 (¶3): Atik, as foundation of the MaH-BaN balance, transfers things from the present governmental order to eternity; every deed below has effect on MaH-BaN, fixed for eternity; everything in the merit of man below. The chapter's deepest claim is the original intention of ¶21: be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqahthrough merit, not through charity. Every other piece of the architecture serves this single end.

What this chapter is doing — the operational mechanism of the link

The chapter's deep claim, in one line. Atik elevates man's service into the World of Reward by fixing the radiance of the upper branches (which require no repair) to the deeds by which man rectifies the lower branch (BaN, which alone was broken) — so that the lower creations attain their perfection through merit and not through charity.

Why operations now? Op. 96 said how Atik clothes A"A and how Atzilut sits governmentally under AK. Op. 97 said why the three-tier architecture exists (three governmental modes divided by time). Op. 98 ¶3 makes the next move: now the question is how Atik specifically does the carrying that ¶8 of Op. 97 named. The previous chapter said Atik takes the deeds from this world and brings them to where they determine the destined ascents; this chapter explains what mechanism makes that taking-and-bringing work. The mechanism is the MaH-BaN balance (the Mitkala of Op. 59 and Op. 96), of which Atik is the foundation. Because every deed below has an effect on that balance, and because Atik is that balance, every deed reaches Atik; and because Atik connects upward (as Malchut of AK) with the AHP branches above, the radiance of the AHP branches becomes fixed in proportion to the deeds. Atik is the fulcrum.

The asymmetry of the branches (¶5–7). Klach has been building toward this for the whole MaH-BaN arc. Only BaN was broken. The breaking-of-the-vessels (Op. 39–44) happened only in the Nekudim of BaN; the Akudim level concealed without breaking (¶5 ties this to Op. 33); the AHP branches radiated without ever needing repair. Why this asymmetry? Because if all branches were intact, no human service would be required, and reward would be charity rather than merit. The breaking of BaN is the cosmic precondition for the cyclical mode of Atzilut-and-below. In BaN was the damage; in MaH is the repair; and the place where the repair happens is the human service of the six millennia.

The six thousand years (¶8). They had to be given a place in which to do what is in their power — the whole concept of the six thousand years of this world. Klach does not soften this. The six millennia are given — the space-and-time in which BaN's repair is enacted by human deeds. The lower creations were created with damage from BaN; completion of this branch is delayed until human service repairs the damage; that delay is the six millennia; that work is the whole content of avodah. The cyclical mode is not eternal. It has a bounded durationsix millennia — at the end of which the work is complete and the eternal mode takes over.

Ascent through the branches (¶9–13). The lower creations emerged from BaN; therefore they had to descend, level by level, down to BaN; and therefore, in the World of Reward, they rise back through every branch they descended through. The structural symmetry is exact. The descent runs through every branch from the AHP down to BaN; the ascent runs back through every branch from BaN up to the AHP. ¶10 specifies the speed difference: BaN's repair takes six millennia (because evil is rooted there and it cannot be undone all at once); each AHP ascent takes one millennium (because there is no evil to delay them — the process completes immediately on those higher levels, for such is the nature of that level, ¶6). Six millennia of descent-into-work; four millennia of ascent-into-radiance (seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth); thereafter, eternity proper, of which we have no conception (¶12). The branches radiate one at a time, each in its proper millennium (¶19); the radiance is delight (¶13) — qualitatively higher levels of existence, given in proportion to the merit already attained.

The transfer-level (¶17). Atik is outside the world (its first three Sefirot are not clothed in Atzilut; in its essence Atik stands above Atzilut). Atik is the head of Atzilut (the head-without-body relation). Atik is Malchut of AK (and so connected upward). These three roles are inseparable: because Atik's essence is above Atzilut, it can receive what is above; because Atik is the head of Atzilut, it can relate to the service below; because Atik is the foundation of MaH-BaN, the deeds of the lower man (which have their effect on MaH-BaN) reach to Atik; and because Atik is connected upward, the deeds reaching Atik call forth the radiance of the upper branches into the lower creations. The transfer is not a single act; it is a standing role of Atik throughout the cyclical mode.

The original intention (¶21). Everything is in the merit of man below and in accordance with his deeds. This is what it all comes down to in the end: the intention is that everything should be attained through merit and not through charity. The principle is be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah. Why this principle? Because charity and merit are categorially distinct: a gift is given; a reward is earned. The receiver of a gift is passive; the receiver of a reward is active — he has made himself fit to receive. The whole architecture — the breaking of BaN, the human service, the repair of MaH-BaN, the carrying through Atik, the fixing of the eternal radiance — exists so that the lower creations are fit-by-their-own-merit to receive the eternal reward. Without this architecture, the same lights would still shine, but they would be charity. With it, they are reward.

The diagrams

Two diagrams. The first traces the operational flow from the human deed to the fixed eternal radiance, showing Atik's three roles in the transfer. The second shows the temporal architecture with the millennial counts attached: six millennia of BaN-repair, one millennium per AHP ascent (the seventh through tenth), then eternity proper.

Diagram 1 — The operational flow: deed → MaH-BaN repair → Atik → radiance

The diagram reads left-to-right (work below) → upward (transfer through Atik) → right (radiance above). Atik is shown with its three roles as three tags. The be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah principle is the label on the entire transfer arc.

op98_operational_flow The operational flow: deed → MaH-BaN repair → Atik → radiance (Op. 98 ¶15–17) through merit and not through charity (be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah, ¶21) deed Man's deed (¶15–16) · enacted in Atzilut-and-below · during the rule of MaH-BaN · six millennia of work balance MaH-BaN balance (¶15) · deed acts on the balance · repair is only in MaH-BaN · (BaN: damage; MaH: repair) deed->balance acts on atik Atik (¶17): three roles at one intersection · essence above Atzilut (first 3 Sefirot uncovered) · head of Atzilut (lower 7 Sefirot in A"A) · Malchut of AK (connected upward) · essence: foundation of MaH-BaN = Mitkala balance->atik reaches (Atik = balance) radiance Radiance from upper branches (¶16, ¶19) · AHP — Ears, Nose, Mouth · then SaG, then AV · proportional to merit below · no repair needed in these branches atik->radiance fixes measure of receiver Lower creations as receiver (¶18) · repaired = made fit to receive · receives in merit, not as charity · qualitatively higher plane of existence radiance->receiver radiates per merit receiver->deed service repairs MaH-BaN

The diagram makes visible what Klach asserts in prose: every deed of the lower man has its effect on the MaH-BaN balance (because the balance is what the deed rectifies); Atik is the balance (its essence is the Mitkala); therefore every deed reaches Atik; and because Atik as Malchut of AK connects upward to the AHP branches, the deeds call forth the radiance of those branches in proportion to the repair below. Atik's three roles (essence above Atzilut; head of Atzilut; Malchut of AK) are the three structural conditions that make the transfer possible.

Diagram 2 — The temporal architecture: six millennia of work, four of ascents, then forever

A horizontal timeline. Six millennia of cyclical work (Atzilut-and-below, BaN repair). Then the seventh through tenth millennia: four ascents, one millennium each, ending at the lights of AV. Then eternity proper, fixed forever.

op98_millennial_timeline The temporal architecture (Op. 98 ¶6, ¶8, ¶11, ¶12, ¶19) six millennia of work; one millennium per AHP ascent; eternity proper afterwards work 1st–6th millennia (¶8) cyclical work BaN repair, six millennia rule of MaH-BaN man's service operates here a7 7th millennium 1st AHP ascent 1,000 years (¶6) work->a7 service complete → a8 8th millennium 2nd AHP ascent 1,000 years a7->a8 a9 9th millennium 3rd AHP ascent 1,000 years a8->a9 a10 10th millennium final ascent reaches lights of AV (¶12) a9->a10 forever Eternity proper (¶12) fixed forever "of which we have no conception whatever" a10->forever all ascents complete →

The timeline gives the reader a precise picture of the temporal architecture. The width of the cyclical bar (six millennia) versus the narrow stripes of the four AHP-ascent millennia visualises ¶6's claim: no evil rooted there; nothing to hold back the radiation; each completes at once. The unbroken eternal-proper region to the right is post-tenth-millenniumof which we have no conception.

Before you start

A short orientation. Most of the technical vocabulary is established by Op. 97; Op. 98 adds two terms and one principle.

Paragraph 1 — Italic gloss / chapter title

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Atik elevates man's service to the World of Reward. Plain English: The chapter title compresses the operational claim into one verb: elevates. Atik is what raises the service of man (the deeds enacted in the cyclical six millennia) to the level of the World of Reward (the eternal radiance from the seventh millennium onward). The title hints at a precise asymmetry: Atik does not transmit the deeds as deeds into eternity; Atik elevates them — converts the finite earthly act into the fixed eternal radiance. The Hebrew chapter heading (kesher ha-hanhagot shel anafei AK, Atik ve-ABYA, the connection of the governments of the branches of AK, Atik and ABYA) names the structural terms the chapter will operate on: anafim (branches — AK's radiations), Atik (the link in the middle), ABYA (the four lower worlds collectively as the cyclical mode).

What this paragraph does: Italic gloss / chapter title. Compresses the chapter's operational claim into a single verb (elevates). Sets the orienting frame: the chapter explains how Atik specifically does the carrying that Op. 97 ¶8 named.

Paragraph 2 — The proposition, Part 1: until MaH and BaN, all in repair; damage in BaN, repair in MaH

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Until MaH and BaN everything proceeded in a state of repair and no delay was necessary there. But the damage was in BaN and its repair is through MaH, and they had to be given a place in which to do what is in their power – until they return to a level beyond that of the worlds, while the level of existence of the lower creations will be raised successively higher and higher through the mystery of the branches of Adam Kadmon, until the end of all ascents. Plain English: Part 1 of the proposition is a single tightly built sentence with five linked claims. (i) Until MaH and BaN everything was in repair. The branches above MaH-BaN — AHP, AV, SaG (in their pre-Atzilut form) — were intact; no breaking happened there. (ii) No delay was necessary on those levels. The process completed immediately; for such is the nature of that level (¶6). (iii) The damage was in BaN; the repair is through MaH. The breaking happened only in BaN; MaH is the repair-light (Op. 80–81). (iv) They had to be given a place to do what is in their power, until they return to a level beyond worlds. The repair-work of MaH-BaN requires a temporal-spatial site — the six thousand years of this world (¶8). Until they return — until the BaN-repair is complete and BaN can rejoin the intact branches beyond the worlds. (v) The lower creations rise through the branches of AK to the end of all ascents. The eschatological ascents (Op. 97 ¶7) — the lower creations ascend through every branch they descended through, until all ascents are complete (the tenth millennium).

What this paragraph does: States Part 1 of the proposition. The five claims set up Part 1's whole exposition (¶5–13): the asymmetry of branches (¶5), the no-delay nature of intact branches (¶6), the damage-and-repair structure of MaH-BaN (¶7), the six millennia (¶8), the ascent through the branches (¶9–13). Each claim has its specific home in the exposition.

Paragraph 3 — The proposition, Part 2: Atik transfers from now to eternity; everything in merit of man

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Therefore, since Atik is the foundation of the interconnection of MaH and Ban, it is Atik that stands to transfer things from this present governmental order to the governmental order of eternity. For every deed by man below has an effect on the interconnection of MaH and BaN and goes on to be fixed for eternity. When all the work of the lower creations is completed, everything necessary in the interconnection of MaH and BaN will be complete and what is necessary will be fixed for all eternity according to the deeds performed by man. Thus we see that everything is in the merit of man below and in accordance with his deeds. Plain English: Part 2 of the proposition is the operational answer to how the transfer is performed. Four linked claims. (i) Therefore, since Atik is the foundation of MaH-BaN, it is Atik that stands to transfer. The therefore is operative: because Atik is the MaH-BaN balance, therefore whatever depends on the MaH-BaN balance reaches Atik. (ii) Every deed has effect on MaH-BaN, fixed for eternity. The deeds act on the balance; the balance transmits the action; the result is fixed in eternity. (iii) When all work is complete, everything in MaH-BaN is complete; fixed for eternity per deeds of man. The condition for the eternal-fixing is the completion of the BaN-repair; the measure of the fixing is the deeds. (iv) Everything in the merit of man below. The closing claim of Part 2: the whole eternal architecture is measured by the deeds of man. Without those deeds, the eternity would still exist, but it would be charity rather than merit.

What this paragraph does: States Part 2 of the proposition. The four claims set up Part 2's exposition (¶14–21): Atik as foundation of the Mitkala (¶14); Atik as the conveyor (¶15); deeds reach summit through Atik (¶16); the transfer-level (¶17); when work is complete (¶18); service only during MaH-BaN rule (¶19); fixed per deeds (¶20); merit not charity (¶21).

Paragraph 4 — Parts announcement

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The proposition consists of two parts. Part 1: Until… The place of service is from Atzilut and below. Part 2: Therefore, since… How the service ascends to eternity, which is the level of the reward. Plain English: Klach's standard structural marker, more compact than usual. Two parts: (i) Part 1 (until…) — where service operates: Atzilut and below (the cyclical six millennia, the place of MaH-BaN repair). (ii) Part 2 (therefore, since…) — how service ascends to eternity (the level of reward, madregat ha-sakhar). Note the precise framing: eternity is the level of reward. The chapter's two terms — cyclical now and eternal after — are now also named the place of service and the level of reward. The two are operationally inseparable: there is no service without the place; no reward without the service.

What this paragraph does: Parts announcement. Names the operational contrast that the two parts will develop: place of service (Part 1) versus level of reward (Part 2), and how the one ascends into the other (the chapter's central question).

Paragraph 5 — Part 1, phrase 1: until MaH and BaN — breaking only in BaN; Akudim concealment is not breakage

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 1: Until MaH and BaN… The phenomena of breaking and repair are found only in BaN. For even though there was a certain aspect of concealment on the level of the Akudim (the lights of the Mouth of Adam Kadmon), this was not because of any breakage. Rather, it was a process brought about in order that it would afterwards be possible for the breakage to occur in the Nekudim (see Opening 33). Plain English: Two structural claims about the asymmetry. (i) Breaking and repair are found only in BaN. The Nekudim breakage (Op. 39–44) happened only in the BaN-level; not in the Akudim, not in any prior level. Therefore repair is only in BaN — MaH repairs BaN; nothing else needs repair. (ii) The Akudim concealment was not breakage but setup. The concealment of the Akudim lights (Op. 33: lights bound in one vessel — the Mouth of AK) was not itself a breaking; it was a process to enable the Nekudim breakage. The Akudim level had to concealhad to provide the structural setup — so that the Nekudim could break. The breaking of BaN was not an accident; it was enabled by the prior Akudim concealment, which itself was deliberately structured to enable it. Why? Because the breaking is the cosmic precondition for the cyclical mode of human service.

What this paragraph does: Establishes the operational asymmetry: only BaN was broken; only there is repair needed. The Akudim/Nekudim distinction (a structural claim from Op. 33–44) is reaffirmed in the new purposive frame: the whole pre-BaN architecture is set up to enable the BaN breaking. (See Op. 33) anchors the cross-reference.

Paragraph 6 — Part 1, phrase 2: everything proceeded in repair; no delay; one thousand years per ENM ascent

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …everything proceeded in a state of repair… Evil was not rooted there and accordingly there was nothing to hold back the radiation. …and no delay was necessary there. As soon as the process began it was completed at once, for such is the nature of that level. (This comes to explain why only one thousand years each are required for the ascents to the Eyes, Nose and Mouth of Adam Kadmon while the repair of BaN requires six thousand years, as discussed further below.) Plain English: Three precisions about the unbroken branches. (i) Why no repair? Evil was not rooted there. The cosmic principle: where evil is rooted, repair is required; where it is not, no repair is required. Nothing to hold back the radiation. The branches radiate unobstructed. (ii) Why no delay? As soon as the process began it was completed at once, for such is the nature of that level. The temporal signature of the unbroken branches: immediate completion. The process is not fast; it is non-temporal in the sense that no time is needed for the completion to follow the beginning. (iii) The millennial accounting. The parenthetical is decisive: one thousand years per ascent to the AHP (ENMEyes, Nose, Mouth; this version of AHP includes Eyes, the highest aperture); six thousand years for BaN's repair. The ratio makes the asymmetry visible: BaN takes six times as long as a single AHP ascent because evil delays the work; AHP takes one millennium per branch because no evil delays. The discussion will continue further below (¶11–13).

What this paragraph does: Explains why the unbroken branches need no repair (no evil) and why their ascents are quick (one millennium each). Establishes the millennial accounting that ¶8 and ¶11–13 will use: six millennia BaN + four millennia ascents + eternity. The root cause of the temporal asymmetry: evil is rooted only in BaN.

Paragraph 7 — Part 1, phrase 3: damage in BaN, repair through MaH; first damage, then man

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> But the damage was in BaN and its repair is through MaH… Here things take longer because the work necessary on this level cannot be completed all at once. First there was the damage, which made it necessary for man to come afterwards and complete the repair of these defects. Plain English: Three precisions about BaN. (i) Things take longer. The cause is named: the work cannot be completed all at once. Why not? Because evil is rooted there (¶6), and repair of evil is protracted. (ii) The temporal sequence. First the damage, then man. The damage precedes the repairer. The cosmic order: first BaN breaks (the Nekudim shevirah); then the lower creations emerge (Op. 33–44 onward); then man comes; then man repairs the damage. Without the prior damage, no man would be needed. (iii) Man's role is the repair. It was necessary for man to come afterwards and complete the repair of these defects. Man is not an afterthought of creation; man is the structural repairer of BaN. The whole of human existence is organised around this repair-task.

What this paragraph does: Specifies the temporal-and-causal sequence of the BaN-repair: damage first; man's coming afterwards; man's repair of the damage. Establishes the human role as the structural repairernot a side-effect of creation, but its operational locus. The six thousand years (¶8) is exactly the time this sequence takes.

Paragraph 8 — Part 1, phrase 4: had to be given a place — six thousand years; until BaN returns to repair

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …and they had to be given a place in which to do what is in their power… This is the whole concept of the six thousand years of the existence of this world. …until they return to a level beyond that of the worlds... i.e. beyond the level of the worlds of Atzilut-Beriyah-Yetzirah-Asiyah. For the lower realms were created with an aspect of damage and defect deriving from BaN, and completion of this branch is delayed until after the creation of evil and the creation of the lower worlds – until evil is repaired by the lower creations, this being their service. This branch (BaN) will then be complete and return to a state of repair like the other branches of Adam Kadmon (the Ears, Nose and Mouth and above). Plain English: Four precisions. (i) The place is the six thousand years. They had to be given a place to do what is in their power — the whole concept of the six thousand years of the existence of this world. The six millennia are the space-and-time site of the BaN-repair. The six millennia are not arbitrary; they are exactly the duration of the operation. (ii) The lower realms were created with damage from BaN. The lower creations carry damage — they are the vessel-fragments of the BaN-Nekudim breakage. Their very existence is the damage-pattern requiring repair. (iii) Completion of BaN is delayed until evil is repaired by the lower creations — this is their service. The delay of BaN's completion is the space in which human service operates. Until evil is repaired, BaN is incomplete; when evil is repaired, BaN returns to the state of the intact branches. (iv) BaN returns to the state of repair like the other branches. The eschatological end-state of BaN: it joins the intact branches above — Ears, Nose, Mouth and above. The cyclical-with-end mode terminates with BaN-rejoined-to-AHP; thereafter, eternity.

What this paragraph does: Specifies the six millennia as the exact temporal site of the BaN-repair. Specifies the origin of human service: the lower realms were created with damage (because they emerged from BaN); the service is the repair of that damage. Specifies the eschatological state of BaN: it rejoins the intact AHP after the repair completes. The cyclical mode is boundedsix millennia and no more.

Paragraph 9 — Part 1, phrase 5: lower creations rise through all branches; branches were made for them

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …while the level of existence of the lower creations will be raised successively higher and higher through the mystery of the branches of Adam Kadmon, until the end of all ascents. (This refers to the period from the seventh millennium to the tenth and thereafter to eternity.) While it is true that the lower creations emerged from this lowest branch (BaN), they must rise up to all the branches (i.e. those of AV and SaG – the lights of the Ears, Nose and Mouth). For all those branches were successive levels required to produce the lower realms (through the developmental chain that consists of all the branches of Adam Kadmon down to BaN, for each branch develops out of the preceding branch). All of them must act to influence the lower creations until everything made for their sake has carried out its allotted task. (For the branches of the Ears, Nose and Mouth were also made for the sake of the lower creations – to perfect them in the World of Reward.) Plain English: Four precisions. (i) The temporal frame. From the seventh millennium to the tenth and thereafter to eternity. The ascent runs from the post-six-millennia eschatological start through the tenth millennium, after which eternity proper. (ii) The descent-ascent symmetry. The lower creations emerged from BaN; therefore they descended through every branch above; therefore they must rise through every branch. (iii) The branches' developmental order. Each branch develops out of the preceding branch. The whole chain — AV, SaG, MaH, BaN — is a developmental sequence; the lower creations, emerging from the lowest, descended through the whole sequence; therefore the ascent must retrace the whole sequence. (iv) The branches were made for the lower creations. The teleological claim: the AHP branches were also made for the sake of the lower creationsto perfect them in the World of Reward. The branches were not made for themselves; they exist for the eventual perfection of the lower creations. The whole branch-architecture is purposivebuilt to elevate the lower creations.

What this paragraph does: States the descent-ascent symmetry (lower creations emerged through the whole chain; therefore must ascend through the whole chain). States the teleological origin of the branches (made for the sake of the lower creations). The purposive claim is striking: the upper branches' very existence is for the lower creations' eventual perfection. The cyclical-with-end mode is now structurally embedded in the whole branch-architecture.

Paragraph 10 — Descent through BaN, ascent through all branches; elevation of plane

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus the lower creations came into being only through the lowest branch – BaN – and they therefore had to descend level by level down to there. Then man came forth to perform his service, after which, in the World of Reward, he will receive successive influences, one after the other, from all the branches that came forth for his sake – the Ears, Nose and Mouth. What will they do for him? They will elevate his plane of existence. For he exists already, but the plane of his existence will be qualitatively purer, higher and better. When all these ascents are complete, it can be said that each of the branches of Adam Kadmon will have carried out its allotted task in the repair of the lower creations that developed from them. Plain English: Five precisions. (i) The lower creations came into being through BaN alone. They emerged through the lowest branch; that is their existential origin. (ii) Therefore they had to descend level by level down to there. The descent traces the developmental chain. (iii) Then man performs his service. The six millennia of cyclical repair-work. (iv) After service, in the World of Reward, man receives successive influences from all the branches that came forth for his sake. The order of ascent matches the order of descent (in reverse). Each branch gives its influence one after the other — not simultaneously, but in sequence. (v) What the branches do — elevate his plane of existence. The operational point: the branches do not give man new existence (he already exists); they elevate the plane of that existence — make it qualitatively purer, higher, better. The closing claim: when all ascents are complete, each branch will have carried out its allotted task in the repair of the lower creations that developed from them.

What this paragraph does: Establishes the descent-and-ascent symmetry in operational detail. The lower creations emerge through BaN; descend through every branch; service operates only on BaN; reward-radiance comes through every branch in turn. The purpose of the AHP radiations: elevate the plane of existence. Each branch has its allotted task — its specific contribution to the perfection of the lower creations. The elevation is qualitative, not existential — man does not become something new; he becomes qualitatively higher than what he is.

Paragraph 11 — Different functions of branches: BaN gives service, AHP gives elevation

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The branches of the Ears, Nose and Mouth have a different function from that of BaN and their effect on the lower creations is different. BaN, the lowest branch, included all the defects we have discussed in connection with the breaking of the vessels, with two results. Firstly, this is what provided man with his service, because it was the need to repair the defects that created the possibility of service. Secondly, the repair is protracted – it takes six thousand years. However the function of the other branches – the Ears, Nose and Mouth – is only to raise the lower creations to ever greater levels of perfection (and the time needed for the ascent in each case is only one thousand years). Initially the lower creations are subject to the mode of government of this lowest branch. Afterwards they will be governed through the part above it, then through the next higher part, each reaching its fitting level, and this is the order of the levels. Plain English: Four precisions. (i) BaN's two results. (a) It provided service (the defects-to-repair created the possibility of service); (b) it takes six thousand years. Without the breaking, no service; without the service, no merit. (ii) AHP's function. Only to raise the lower creations to ever greater levels of perfection. No service given; only elevation received. (iii) AHP's speed. One thousand years per ascent. Four ascents (Eyes, Ears, Nose, Mouth — or just three plus the prior gathering, depending on how one counts the AHP), four millennia (seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth). (iv) The order of governance. Initially governed by BaN-mode (the cyclical six millennia); afterwards by the next higher part (post-six-millennia ascent through the lowest AHP); then the next higher; each reaching its fitting level. The governance order in the eschatological period: climb one branch per millennium, until the highest (AV) is reached at the tenth millennium.

What this paragraph does: Articulates the two distinct functions of the branches: BaN gives service (because of the defects); AHP gives elevation (because of their purpose-of-perfecting). Specifies the order of governance in the eschatological ascent: progressive climbing, one branch per millennium, in the order of the developmental chain (in reverse).

Paragraph 12 — Tenth millennium: completion of ascents; eternity afterwards (of which we have no conception)

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus the existence of the lower creations will only attain its necessary level of perfection after all the ascents in the tenth millennium. From then on is eternity, of which we have no conception whatever. The creation will then already have been totally perfected, having completed all ascents. Plain English: Three precisions. (i) The lower creations attain perfection only after the tenth millennium. The temporal endpoint of the ascending period is the end of the tenth millennium. (ii) From then on is eternity. Eternity proper — the post-ascent state. (iii) Of which we have no conception whatever. Klach is candid. The fixed forever state is not describable in terms of the cyclical or even ascending modes. Of eternity-proper we have no conception. The honest acknowledgment of epistemic limit: we can describe the six millennia (we live in them); we can describe the four millennia of ascents (they have a temporal structure analogous to ours); but the post-tenth-millennium fixed eternity exceeds our conceptual reach. The creation will then already have been totally perfected.

What this paragraph does: Names the eschatological endpoint (tenth millennium) and acknowledges the epistemic limit of describing what comes after. The fixed eternity is not the time of ascents (which Klach can describe); it is something elseof which we have no conception. The acknowledgment is itself doctrinally important: Klach does not speculate about what eternity is like internally; it confines itself to that it is, that it is fixed, that it is the post-cycle state.

Paragraph 13 — Summary of Part 1: lowest branch gives service; others give radiance

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus we see that while the lowest branch functioned to give the lower creations the opportunity of service, the other branches – which require no repair – do not provide any possibility of service but rather give radiance and delight in proportion to the merit already attained through the earlier service. (Summary of Part 1: (1) The ascents to the Ears, Nose and Mouth require only one thousand years in each case whereas the complete repair of the branches of MaH and BaN takes six thousand years. This is because in the Ears, Nose and Mouth there is no evil to delay their repair, which is not so in the case of MaH and BaN. (2) Just as the branches of BaN emerged through the chain of development from those of the Ears, Nose and Mouth, so the Ears, Nose and Mouth bring completion to the lower creations when they ascend to them in the World of Reward. This is how the Ears, Nose and Mouth fulfill their function.) Plain English: Two main precisions in the body, plus a parenthetical summary. (i) BaN's role: opportunity of service. The lowest branch functions to give the lower creations the opportunity of service. Without BaN, no service. (ii) AHP's role: radiance and delight in proportion to merit. The unbroken branches give radiance and delight — both experiential terms (ohr = radiance; oneg = delight). The radiance is not absolute; it is proportional to merit already attained. The quality of the eternal experience tracks the quality of the earthly service. Parenthetical summary: (1) one thousand years per ENM ascent vs six thousand for MaH-BaN, because no evil in ENM; (2) the descent-ascent symmetry is structural — ENM brought lower creations down through development; ENM brings them up through reward. The parenthetical compresses the exposition's main structural-and-temporal claims into the standard summary-of-part-1 Klachic form.

What this paragraph does: Closes Part 1 with a summary contrast: BaN gives service (the cyclical labor); AHP gives radiance/delight (the eternal reward). The parenthetical compresses ¶6, ¶8, ¶9–11 into a single summary. The experiential face of the eternal reward (delight) is named for the first time — the eternal mode is not just fixed or radiant; it is delightful (and the depth of the delight is proportional to the merit attained).

Paragraph 14 — Part 2, phrase 1: Atik as foundation of MaH-BaN, the Mitkala

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 2: Therefore, since Atik is the foundation of the interconnection of MaH and Ban… For the essence of Atik is the Balance, as discussed earlier (Opening 59 Part 1 and Opening 96 end). Plain English: Two precisions. (i) The therefore. The Hebrew al ken (therefore) at the start of Part 2 is operative: because Atik is the MaH-BaN foundation, therefore Atik is the transferer. The whole of Part 2 unfolds under this therefore. (ii) Atik's essence is the Balance. The Mitkala — the equilibrium of MaH and BaN, kindness and severity, male and female. As discussed earlier (Op. 59 Part 1 and Op. 96 end). The Op. 59 Part 1 citation grounds the Mitkala concept; the Op. 96 end citation grounds the Mitkala-as-Atik's-essence claim. The chapter is now building on both prior claims: the Mitkala of Op. 59 is the Atik-essence of Op. 96; therefore Atik is the foundation of MaH-BaN; therefore every deed acting on MaH-BaN reaches Atik.

What this paragraph does: Anchors Atik's identity in the Mitkala of Op. 59 / Op. 96, then sets up the Part 2 inference: because Atik is the MaH-BaN balance, therefore Atik is the transferer. The two cross-references make the chain of prior reasoning explicit.

Paragraph 15 — Part 2, phrase 2: why Atik is the conveyor — the chain of reasoning

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …it is Atik that stands to transfer things from this present governmental order to the governmental order of eternity. Why is Atik said to be the conveyor that makes the transfer between the affairs of this world and eternity? The reason is that all the affairs of this world depend on the mystery of MaH and BaN and their repair, which provided man with the possibility of service. The radiance shines to him afterwards from the supreme branches in proportion to the repair carried out by man. Since Atik is the very foundation of the interconnection of MaH and BaN, being entirely built of all their different aspects, Atik is bound up with man's service in the sense of determining the reward. This is why Atik is said to be the conveyor or transmitter from one governmental order to another – from that of the period of work to that of the period of reward, as the proposition goes on to explain. Plain English: A five-step chain of reasoning. (i) All affairs of this world depend on MaH-BaN and their repair. The operational claim: every worldly thing depends on the MaH-BaN balance and its repair. (ii) The repair provided man with service. The damage-and-repair structure is what makes service possible. (iii) The radiance shines afterwards from the supreme branches in proportion to the repair. The cause-effect relation: radiance (eternal) is proportional to repair (cyclical). (iv) Atik is the very foundation of MaH-BaN, entirely built of all their aspects. The Op. 96 / Op. 74 doctrine recapped. (v) Therefore Atik is bound up with man's service in the sense of determining the reward. The connection: because Atik is the foundation, and the deeds act on the foundation, therefore Atik determines the reward. The closing line: therefore Atik is the conveyor between the period of work and the period of reward. The chain is tight; each link is operative.

What this paragraph does: Provides the chain of reasoning that justifies why Atik is the conveyor. The chain begins with the dependency of all worldly affairs on MaH-BaN, runs through the radiance-per-repair relation, lands on Atik's being the MaH-BaN foundation, and concludes with Atik's role of determining the reward. The operational face of Atik now has a justification — not merely a function.

Paragraph 16 — Part 2, phrase 3: deeds have effect on MaH-BaN, fixed for eternity; main reward in World to Come

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> For every deed by man below has an effect on the interconnection of MaH and BaN and goes on to be fixed for eternity. I have already explained that man's deeds below bring about the repair above, and the repair is only in MaH and BaN. However its effect does not end there. That would have been the case had there been no reward except in this world. However the main reward will be in the World to Come, after we pass from the government of MaH and BaN to the government of the other branches – those of SaG followed by those of AV. If so, the other branches must be affected by this service – not in the sense of being rectified, since they do not need repair, but rather in the sense that they radiate afterwards in proportion to the repair carried out below, which makes the receiver fit to receive. Plain English: Five precisions. (i) Deeds bring repair above; repair only in MaH-BaN. The operational claim restated. (ii) The effect does not end there. If reward were only in this world, then yes, the effect would end at the MaH-BaN repair. (iii) But the main reward is in the World to Come. The eschatological reward is the primary reward; the this-world reward is secondary. (iv) Governance shifts from MaH-BaN to SaG to AV. The governance sequence in the eschatological period: first governed by MaH-BaN (cyclical six millennia); then by SaG (the next higher expansion); then by AV (the highest). The progression matches the AHP-ascent sequence (¶11). (v) Other branches affected — not rectified but radiating per repair. The crucial refinement. The other branches are affected — their radiance is proportional to the repair below. But they are not rectified (they need no repair). What makes the receiver fit to receive: the receiver's repair (man's service). The upper branches' radiance does not change; what changes is the receiver's capacity.

What this paragraph does: Establishes the governance sequence of the eschatological period (MaH-BaN → SaG → AV) and the radiance-as-proportion-to-repair mechanism. The deepest precision: the upper branches' radiance does not change with merit; what changes is the receiver's capacity. This articulates the fitness-of-receiver principle that ¶18 will name be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah.

Paragraph 17 — Atik as the transfer-level: outside the world but head of Atzilut; three roles

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> One level is therefore necessary in order to take these repairs – which were originally acts of service rectifying Atzilut and its branches – and transfer them to a plane on which there are no more repairs since no more are needed, but where the repairs already carried out elicit the radiation of the eternal reward that will be given when the branches of AV and SaG rule. The level that accomplishes this transfer is Atik, which is outside the world but stands as head to the world. (The first three Sefirot of Atik are not clothed in Atzilut and thus Atik in its intrinsic essence is beyond Atzilut but stands as head over it.) At the same time Atik, as Malchut of Adam Kadmon, is also connected with what is above it. (As head of Atzilut, Atik relates to the world of service, while as Malchut of Adam Kadmon, Atik has the power to transfer the service to the World of Reward – in the sense of fixing the measure of the reward for each repair.) This is how Atik accomplishes this transfer. Plain English: Four precisions about Atik's structural location. (i) Atik takes the repairs from Atzilut and transfers them. The taking operates in Atzilut (where the repairs are repairs); the transferring lifts them to a plane where they elicit eternal radiance. (ii) Atik is outside the world but stands as head to the world. The paradox: outside yet head. The parenthetical explains: the first three Sefirot of Atik are not clothed in Atziluttherefore Atik in its essence is beyond Atzilut, but its lower seven Sefirot clothe in A"A (Op. 96), so Atik stands as head over Atzilut. (iii) Atik as Malchut of AK is connected with above. The upward connection: as Malchut of AK, Atik is part of AK's body, hence connected with everything above it (the AHP radiations, AK proper). (iv) The role-distinction. As head of Atzilut, Atik relates to the world of service. As Malchut of AK, Atik has the power to transfer the service to the World of Reward — in the sense of fixing the measure of the reward for each repair. The transfer is fixing the measure of the reward per repair — i.e. binding the eternal radiance (above) to the cyclical service (below) via the measure-correspondence between the two.

What this paragraph does: Articulates Atik's three structural roles and shows how the transfer is operationally performed. Three roles: (i) essence above Atzilut (first three Sefirot uncovered); (ii) head of Atzilut (lower Sefirot in A"A); (iii) Malchut of AK (connected upward). The transfer is performed at the intersection: as head, Atik receives the repairs from below; as Malchut of AK, Atik fixes the measure of the eternal radiance to the repairs; as essence-above-Atzilut, Atik holds the transfer-mechanism outside the cyclical mode. The transfer is therefore not a single act but a standing role at the intersection of three structural positions.

Paragraph 18 — Part 2, phrase 4: when work is complete — man repaired to receive in merit

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> When all the work of the lower creations is completed… The truth is that when the time of service is complete, it means that the time of the repair of all the levels (including the branches of AV and SaG) are complete. For even though the upper branches require no actual repair, man has to be repaired in the sense of being fit to receive their lights through merit and not as a gift of charity, for this was the original intention. (The upper levels are repaired through the repair of the receiver, because only then is the giver able to influence the receiver.) Plain English: Four precisions. (i) When the time of service is complete. The six millennia end. (ii) Time of repair of all levels — including AV and SaG — is complete. This is the deeper claim: even though AV and SaG do not themselves need repair, the time of their repair-as-receiver-fitness is complete. (iii) Man has to be repaired to be fit to receive in merit, not as charity. The original intention: be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah. The repair of the upper branchesnot their own, but the receiver's fitness to receive them — is what makes their radiance reward-not-gift. (iv) The upper levels are repaired through the repair of the receiver. The general principle of giver-receiver asymmetry: only when the receiver is fit can the giver influence the receiver. The giver (the upper branches) does not change; the receiver (man) changes — and this is what is meant by the upper branches being repaired.

What this paragraph does: Names the original intentionbe-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah — and articulates the deeper sense of upper-branch repair: not their repair, but the receiver's repair, which makes the giver-receiver relation operative. The principle is foundational and will recur at ¶21.

Paragraph 19 — Service only during MaH-BaN rule; effects reach summit through Atik

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus the actual repair in MaH and BaN brought about through man's deeds elicits a corresponding radiation of the lights of the other branches, and accordingly when those lights shine it will be through merit, since their radiation was elicited through man's merit during his repair of MaH and BaN. Thus the time of man's service is only during the rule of MaH and BaN, but the effects of this service reach the very summit of all levels until the entire repair of MaH and BaN will be complete. Thus it is man's merit that calls forth each of these levels – the Ears, Nose and Mouth – to shine their lights in turn, each in its proper time (in its respective millennium). Plain English: Four precisions. (i) Repair in MaH-BaN by deeds elicits radiation in the other branches. The eliciting relation is operative: deeds cause the upper branches' radiance. (ii) Therefore the upper branches' radiance is through merit. When AHP shines, the radiance is because man earned itthe radiation was elicited through man's merit during his repair of MaH-BaN. (iii) Service only during MaH-BaN rule. The time of service is exactly the time of MaH-BaN governance — i.e. the six millennia. (iv) Effects reach summit, each level in its proper millennium. The eschatological consequence: man's deeds, performed during MaH-BaN's rule, call forth each of the AHP — Ears, Nose, Mouth — to shine in turn, each in its proper millennium (seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth). The one-thousand-year-per-ascent of ¶6, ¶11 is now grounded causally: each AHP branch shines because man earned it during the cyclical period.

What this paragraph does: Articulates the temporal-bounded vs eschatologically-unbounded contrast: service is only during MaH-BaN rule (six millennia); but its effects reach the summit of all levels each level in its millennium. The causal link between cyclical deed and eschatological radiance is now stated operationally via Atik's transfer-role.

Paragraph 20 — Part 2, phrase 5: complete in MaH-BaN; fixed per deeds for eternity

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> …everything necessary in the interconnection of MaH and BaN will be complete and what is necessary will be fixed for all eternity according to the deeds performed by man. The end effect reaches eternity in the way explained above. Plain English: Two precisions. (i) When everything necessary in MaH-BaN is complete. The condition: the BaN-repair is fully enacted. (ii) What is necessary is fixed for eternity per deeds. The consequence: the eternal statewhat is fixed in eternity — follows the measure of the deeds. The end effect reaches eternity in the way explained above: through Atik's transfer-role at the intersection of its three structural positions (¶17). The brief paragraph compresses the entire mechanism into one summary line.

What this paragraph does: Closes the operational chain: condition (MaH-BaN complete) → consequence (fixed for eternity per deeds), with the cross-reference to ¶17's three-roles transfer-mechanism. The end effect is now structurally placed.

Paragraph 21 — Part 2, phrase 6: everything in the merit of man — the original intention

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus we see that everything is in the merit of man below and in accordance with his deeds. This is what it all comes down to in the end: the intention is that everything should be attained through merit and not through charity. Plain English: Two precisions. (i) Everything is in the merit of man below and in accordance with his deeds. The strong claim: everything — the whole eternal radiance, the whole post-cycle state, every fixed feature of the eternity — is in the merit of man. Not just the deeds' effects but the whole architecture's purpose serves this. (ii) The intention: everything attained through merit, not through charity. The original intention. Be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah. The whole prior architecture — the breaking of BaN, the asymmetry of the branches, the six millennia, the AHP's no-repair-no-service, Atik's transfer-role at the intersection of its three structural positions — exists for this single end. Without this end, the architecture is unintelligible.

What this paragraph does: Closes the chapter with the original intention. Names the deepest principle that motivates the whole operational mechanism: be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah — the receiver attains the eternal good through his own merit, not as an unearned gift. The chapter's deepest claim: every prior structural move serves this single end.

Synthesis

The chapter's deep claim, in one sentence. Atik, being the foundation of the MaH-BaN balance, elevates man's service from the cyclical six millennia (where MaH and BaN are the operational repair-pair) into the eternal reward (where the AHP branches radiate one millennium each through the seventh-through-tenth millennia and thereafter forever) — so that the lower creations attain the eternal good through their own merit and not as a gift of charity.

Op. 96, Op. 97, Op. 98 as a triptych. Op. 96 was structural: how Atik clothes A"A, what Mitkala-rooted-in-radla is transmitted, what the chain of governance looks like. Op. 97 was purposive: three governmental modes divided by time, with Atik as the carrier; AK as the meta-frame. Op. 98 is operational: how the carrying is concretely performed — through the asymmetry of the branches (only BaN broken), through the human service that repairs MaH-BaN, through Atik's three structural roles (essence above Atzilut, head of Atzilut, Malchut of AK connected upward), and through the be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqah principle that motivates the whole architecture. The three chapters together give the unit's complete answer: what the link is (96), why the link exists (97), how the link works (98).

The asymmetry of the branches as the operational locus. The chapter's single most important operational claim is that only BaN was broken. From this asymmetry follows everything else: the human service (because the lower creations carry damage from BaN); the six millennia (because the BaN-repair takes six thousand years); the one millennium per AHP ascent (because there is no evil there); the radiance-per-merit relation (because the upper branches' radiance is proportional to the receiver's fitness, which is itself proportional to the repair carried out below). The whole operational architecture is the asymmetry of the branches unfolded in time.

The original intention principle as the keystone. Be-zekhut ve-lo bi-tzedaqahthrough merit and not through charity. ¶18 names it as the original intention; ¶21 names it as what it all comes down to in the end. The principle is the keystone of the whole architecture. Without it, the breaking of BaN is gratuitous, the human service is arbitrary, the AHP's no-repair-but-radiate-per-merit is unmotivated. With it, every piece falls into place: BaN was broken so that service would be required; service is required so that merit would be earned; merit is earned so that the eternal radiance is reward and not gift; Atik is the foundation-of-the-balance so that the deeds fix the radiance per merit. The whole architecture exists for the receiver's fitness-by-his-own-repair to receive as reward what would otherwise be as gift.

Atik's three structural roles articulated together. ¶17 articulates Atik's three roles together for the first time in Klach: essence above Atzilut (first three Sefirot uncovered, ¶17 line 2); head of Atzilut (lower Sefirot clothed in A"A, ¶17 line 3); Malchut of AK connected upward (¶17 line 4). The transfer is performed at the intersection of the three roles. Each role has its operational signature: as essence above Atzilut, Atik holds the transfer-mechanism outside the cyclical mode (and so is not consumed by it); as head of Atzilut, Atik receives the repairs from below (where human service rectifies MaH-BaN); as Malchut of AK, Atik fixes the measure of the eternal radiance to the repairs received. The three roles are one Atik viewed under three aspects.

The temporal architecture, made precise. Op. 97 ¶7 named the seventh millennium onwards as eternity, with internal phasing into time-of-ascents (seventh through tenth) and eternity-proper (tenth onward, fixed forever). Op. 98 makes the temporal architecture precise: six millennia of BaN-repair (cyclical work in Atzilut-and-below); four millennia of AHP ascents — one millennium each, in sequence, the seventh through tenth (¶6 parenthetical, ¶11, ¶19); eternity proper afterwards, of which we have no conception (¶12). The total is six plus four of describable temporality, then forever of indescribable. The describable eschatological window is four millennia; the meta-temporal fixed eternity is infinite.

The lower creations' descent-and-ascent symmetry. ¶9–10 establishes a symmetry that organises the chapter's whole spatial picture. The lower creations emerged from BaN — the lowest branch; therefore they had to descend through every branch above (because each developed out of the preceding). Therefore, in the World of Reward, they ascend back through every branch in reverse order (¶11's initially governed by the lowest branch; afterwards by the next higher; each reaching its fitting level). The AHP branches were also made for the sake of the lower creationsto perfect them in the World of Reward (¶9 parenthetical). The branches were not made for themselves; they exist for the lower creations' eventual perfection. The teleological origin of the branch-architecture is now clear.

Where Op. 98 sets up Op. 99–100. The unit Op. 96–100 has two more chapters. Likely topics: how the zivug operations of Op. 64–69 intersect with the transfer-by-Atik mechanism (the reward radiance may be specified as zivug-derived); the boundary between Atik's first-three-Sefirot-uncovered and lower-seven-clothed-in-A"A (¶17's structural detail may be developed); the operational mechanics of the AHP radiance into ABYA (how do the upper branches concretely radiate downward into the lower creations during the seventh-through-tenth millennia?); the relation of the cyclical-six-millennia-perfection to the ascending-four-millennia-perfection (one is bringing the wheel to its end; the other is climbing past the wheel into the radiance — what is the deepest connection?). Op. 99–100 will close the unit.

Self-review notes

Looking ahead — grounded foreshadowing

Op. 98 specifies Atik's elevation role: Atik elevates man's service to the World of Reward. Forecasts Op. 99, 100.

  • **Op. 98's Atik elevates man's service doctrine** is the structural mechanism of the human-merit-as-cosmic-input doctrine. Op. 48 (hand of Heaven / hand of man), Op. 125 (parallel partnership of Z"A-Nukva — man's service elicits God's influence), Op. 137 ¶12 (six thousand years as the operational lifetime of human service): all operate on Op. 98's elevation-mechanism. Atik is what makes the merit-not-charity original intention operationally real.
  • **Op. 98's six thousand years are the place to do their work claim** specifies the cycle's content: service. The Op. 98 framework runs through every later operational chapter that treats human deeds as cosmically real.
