Section: The 288 Sparks (Openings 54–58)

TL;DR

This chapter closes the 288 Sparks unit (Op. 54-58) by resolving an apparent contradiction in Lurianic teaching about the Primordial Kings: (a) they are from Malchut / BaN and therefore lacking repair (Etz Chayim, Shaar Shevirat HaKelim ch. 8, 47a); but elsewhere (b) the rule of Malchut brings the repair (Etz Chayim, Derushey HaNekudot ch. 3, 37b). Two parts: (Part 1) The beauty and delight of Malchut are only in her when Yesod is with her — through Yesod she becomes complete. Hind of love (Proverbs 5:19) — Malchut arouses love when complete. The Moon-mystery: in herself, glass that does not shine; through the Sun, beautiful as the moon (Song of Songs 6:10); "the advantage of land is in everything" (Ecclesiastes 5:8). Judgment-principle: mitigated → source of all joy (no bread of shame — recipients justly deserve reward); unmitigated → source of all evil. Like fire (right heat = satisfaction; too hot = burns) and wine (moderate = joy; excess = intoxicates). Yesod's mission = sweeten Malchut. Without Yesod: Malchut = source of deficiency and sadness — like unripe fruit. With Yesod: source of joy for the male — like ripe fruit. (Part 2) Resolution of the contradiction: When Malchut rules = causes repair = Malchut with the light of the male. When Primordial Kings derive from BaN = lacking = Malchut without the light of the male. At first everything was BaN = Nukva without male = source of all sadness. "Turn away your eyes from me" (Song of Songs 6:5; Zohar) — Zeir Anpin turns away when Nukva not sweetened through Yesod. Apparent paradox: she's incomplete unless male turns; male doesn't turn unless complete — how is she completed? Key distinction: building (via Yesod) ≠ sustenance (via Zeir Anpin turning). Yesod builds Malchut; Zeir then turns and sends sustenance. Building depends on deeds of lower creations (Malchut is their root). At creation: Yesod built Nukva without existing deeds — through the power of anticipated future deeds of the righteous. After built: Zeir turns and sends blessing. When Yesod came as MaH: Nukva completed → arouses delight in the male → AV/SaG/MaH join BaN in the mystery of "about three months after" (Genesis 38:24, Tamar; ARI). This connection of MaH and BaN first comes about generally, then detail by detail in each world.

Chapter map

This chapter closes the 288 Sparks unit and serves as a bridge to the World of Repair unit (Op. 59-69). After Op. 57 explained how the 288 sparks prevent destruction, Op. 58 explains how MaH (= the new radiation of Op. 54) operationally builds the broken Nukva (= deficient BaN), so that Zeir can then turn to her with blessing.

What this chapter is doing — two parts

Part 1 — Yesod completes Malchut. Beauty and delight only with Yesod. Hind of love (Proverbs 5:19). Moon-mystery (Song 6:10; Eccl 5:8). Judgment mitigated = joy without bread-of-shame; unmitigated = evil. Fire and wine illustrations. Yesod's mission = sweeten. Unripe vs. ripe fruit.

Part 2 — Resolution of contradiction. Malchut-with-male = repair; Malchut-without-male = lacking. Primordial Kings = BaN without male. Song of Songs 6:5: Zeir turns away. Building (Yesod) vs. sustenance (Zeir turning) — two distinct flows. Building depends on lower-creations' deeds; at first done through anticipated future deeds. MaH-as-Yesod completes Nukva; AV/SaG/MaH join BaN — "about three months after" (Genesis 38:24, Tamar). General first, then detail by detail.

Paragraph 1 — Italic gloss

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> MaH (Yesod) builds Nukva (the deficient BaN), after which Zeir Anpin sends her a flow of blessing. Plain English: Theme: MaH (= Yesod) builds Nukva (deficient BaN) → afterwards Zeir Anpin sends her flow of blessing.

Concepts: mah_expansion, ban_expansion, nukva, yesod_builds_nukva, mah_builds_ban, building_vs_sustenance.

Paragraph 2 — The proposition

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The beauty and delight of Malchut are only in her when Yesod is with her, for through Yesod she becomes complete, whereas when Malchut is without Yesod, she is the source of all deficiency and sadness. But when Malchut is with Yesod, she is the source of all joy for the male himself. Accordingly, at first everything was in the mystery of BaN, which is Nukva (the female) without the male, which is the source of all sadness. And the Six Directions (Zeir Anpin) did not turn to Malchut, because they did not receive delight. But when Yesod came in the mystery of MaH, she was then completed and she herself arouses delight in the male himself, and this is the repair. Plain English: Six claims: (1) beauty and delight of Malchut only with Yesod; (2) without Yesod = source of all deficiency and sadness; (3) with Yesod = source of all joy for the male himself; (4) at first everything in BaN = Nukva without male = source of all sadness; (5) Six Directions did not turn to her (no delight received); (6) when Yesod came as MaH, she completed → arouses delight in male → this is the repair.

Concepts: yesod_builds_nukva, mah_builds_ban, nukva, dejection_vs_brotherly_love, tikkun_repair.

Paragraph 3 — Framing: the apparent contradiction

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> This is the answer to an apparent contradiction in the teachings relating to the Primordial Kings. On the one hand we are taught that they were from the side of Malchut and were therefore lacking repair (Etz Chayim, Shaar Shevirat HaKelim ch. 8, 47a). Elsewhere, however, we find that, on the contrary, it is the rule of Malchut that brings the repair (Etz Chayim, Derushey HaNekudot ch. 3, 37b). Plain English: Apparent contradiction in Primordial-Kings teachings: (a) from Malchut → lacking repair (Etz Chayim, Shaar Shevirat HaKelim ch. 8, 47a); (b) rule of Malchut brings repair (Etz Chayim, Derushey HaNekudot ch. 3, 37b).

Paragraph 4 — Parts announcement

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The proposition consists of two parts: Part 1: The beauty and delight... This explains how Malchut is the source of joy and of sadness. Part 2: Accordingly... How this relates to the Primordial Kings. Plain English: Two parts: (1) Malchut as source of joy and of sadness; (2) application to Primordial Kings.

Paragraph 5 — Part 1: hind of love (Proverbs 5:19); beauty + delight; ya'elet

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 1: The beauty and delight of Malchut... As explained earlier, Malchut is the "hind of love" (Proverbs 5:19) that arouses love in the lights and causes them to flash in excitement, for it is to Malchut that the terms beauty and delight apply. Beauty results from properly ordered repairs with no mixture of darkness but everything arranged to serve as a perfect order of government with all the repairs and adjustments necessary for the flow of good. Delight results from beauty, and thus the verse continues: "...and a roe of grace" (ibid.). The Hebrew word for "roe" (יעלת, ya'elet) has the connotations of elevating and enhancing. In other words, the lights flash forth to greet her in the way that a father's love is aroused for his son when the latter meets with his approval, or in the way that a husband's love is aroused for his wife. Plain English: Malchut = hind of love (Proverbs 5:19) — arouses love, causes flashing. Beauty = properly ordered repairs, no darkness mixed in; delight = result of beauty. "Roe of grace" (Heb. ya'elet) — connotations of elevating/enhancing. Lights flash to greet her — like father's love for son, husband's love for wife.

Concepts: hind_of_love, nukva, dejection_vs_brotherly_love, tikkun_repair.

Paragraph 6 — Moon-mystery; Eccl 5:8, Song 6:10

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> ...are only in her when Yesod is with her... This is explained in many places in the Zohar and Tikkuney Zohar, and this is the mystery contained in the verse, "The advantage of land is in everything" (Ecclesiastes 5:8). This is the mystery of the moon, which in its intrinsic nature is a "glass that does not shine", yet through the power of the sun, she shines and is seen to be beautiful, as it says, "beautiful as the moon" (Song of Songs 6:10). Plain English: Eccl 5:8: "advantage of land is in everything" — Moon-mystery. Moon intrinsically a "glass that does not shine"; through Sun, beautiful as the moon (Song of Songs 6:10).

Concepts: moon_glass_does_not_shine, nukva, shechinah.

Paragraph 7 — Judgment principle: mitigated = joy (no bread of shame); unmitigated = evil; fire/wine

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Such is the nature of Judgment (Din) and all that comes from it. If it is mitigated, it is the source of all joy (for the recipients justly deserve their reward and there is no "bread of shame"). But if it is unmitigated, it is the source of all evil, which is not so in the case of Kindness (Chessed). Fire is also like this: if the heat is at the necessary level, it provides great satisfaction, but if it is too hot, it burns. So it is with wine: if one drinks in moderation, it is "the wine that brings joy", but if one drinks to excess, it is the wine that intoxicates. This is the mystery of the Nukva. If she is mitigated and sweetened with kindly influences (חסדים, chassadim), she arouses every kind of joy and love. But if she is unmitigated, on the contrary, she causes every kind of sadness. Yesod's mission is precisely to sweeten Malchut. Plain English: Judgment mitigated → source of all joy (recipients justly deserve, no bread of shame). Unmitigated → source of all evil (not so for Chessed). Fire: right heat = satisfaction; too hot = burns. Wine: moderate = joy; excess = intoxicates. Nukva's mystery: mitigated/sweetened with chassadim → joy/love; unmitigated → sadness. Yesod's mission: sweeten Malchut.

Concepts: din, bread_of_shame, chessed, imma_sweetening_power, nukva, yesod_builds_nukva.

Paragraph 8 — Through Yesod, completeness; Shechinah's repair depends on Yesod

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> ...for through Yesod she becomes complete... For Yesod gives her what is suitable to bring her to a state of completeness and mitigation. However, the governmental order is so arranged that the Shechinah is not rectified on her own but her repair depends upon Yesod. Plain English: Yesod gives her what is suitable for completeness and mitigation. Governmental order: Shechinah is not rectified on her own — her repair depends on Yesod.

Concepts: yesod_builds_nukva, shechinah, tikkun_repair.

Paragraph 9 — Without Yesod = source of sadness; unripe fruit

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> ...whereas when Malchut is without Yesod, she is the source of all deficiency and sadness. As we have said, if she is not complete, she is the source of all deficiency. It is like unripe fruits, which because they are not ready or complete are bad, but when they become ripe, are sweet and good. Plain English: Without Yesod = source of all deficiency. Like unripe fruits — bad because not complete; ripe = sweet and good.

Concepts: nukva, dejection_vs_brotherly_love.

Paragraph 10 — With Yesod = joy for male; ripe fruit ready (Proverbs 5:19)

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> But when Malchut is with Yesod, she is the source of all joy for the male himself. This is the concept of "the hind of love" (of which it is said, "...let her breasts satisfy you at all times" – Proverbs 5:19). This is when she is already like a fruit that is ripe and ready. Plain English: With Yesod = source of all joy for the male. Hind of love (Proverbs 5:19: "let her breasts satisfy you at all times"). Ripe fruit ready.

Concepts: hind_of_love, nukva, yesod_builds_nukva, zivug_coupling.

Paragraph 11 — Resolution: Malchut WITH male = repair; Malchut WITHOUT = lacking

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> This enables us to resolve the apparent contradiction mentioned above. When we say that it is the rule of Malchut that causes the repair, this is the rule of Malchut with the light of the male. However, when we say that the Primordial Kings were deficient because they derive from the name of BaN, this is because they are from Malchut without the light of the male. Plain English: Resolution: Malchut ruling-with-male = repair. Primordial Kings deficient because from Malchut without male.

Concepts: nukva, kings_who_ruled, tikkun_repair, ban_expansion.

Paragraph 12 — Part 2: at first BaN = Nukva without male; "Turn away your eyes" (Song 6:5)

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 2: Accordingly, at first everything was in the mystery of BaN, which is Nukva (the female) without the male... As we have explained, when we say that the Primordial Kings derive from BaN, this means they derive from the category of Malchut when unconnected with the light of the male. ...which is the source of all sadness... in accordance with the mystery of, "Turn away your eyes from me" (Song of Songs 6:5). As explained in the Zohar, this means that as long as the Nukva is not sweetened through Yesod, Zeir Anpin turns away from her and is unwilling to send a flow of influence. This is when the sadness previously mentioned reigns, when the lights are closed up. Plain English: Part 2. BaN = Nukva without male. "Turn away your eyes from me" (Song of Songs 6:5; Zohar): as long as Nukva not sweetened through Yesod, Zeir turns away, unwilling to send influence. Sadness reigns; lights closed up.

Concepts: turn_away_your_eyes, ban_expansion, nukva, dejection_vs_brotherly_love.

Paragraph 13 — The apparent paradox: she's incomplete unless he turns; he doesn't turn unless complete

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> It could be objected that we have stated that all Nukva's perfection derives from the Yesod, which is the male. If so, then as long as the male does not turn towards her, she is incomplete. But as long as she is incomplete, the male does not turn to her. If so, how is she to become complete? Plain English: Apparent paradox: she's incomplete unless male turns to her; male doesn't turn unless she's complete. How does she become complete?

Concepts: nukva, yesod_builds_nukva, building_vs_sustenance.

Paragraph 14 — Resolution: building (Yesod) ≠ sustenance (Zeir turning); anticipated future deeds

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The answer is that when we say that the male (Zeir Anpin) turns to her, this is to give her a flow of sustenance, but this is not the same as when we say that Yesod shines in her, which is in order to build her. The shining of Yesod in Malchut is something that depends on the extent to which she is built, which in turn depends on the deeds of the lower creations. Yesod is what actually builds Malchut, which it does when she is completed through the deeds of the lower creations, since she is their root, as discussed earlier. The entire influence of the male (i.e. when Zeir Anpin turns to her) is of plenty and blessing, but this is not the actual building of Malchut (which is carried out by Yesod). This blessing comes to her after she has already been entirely built through the deeds of the lower creations.
(To summarize: At first it is necessary for Yesod to shine in the Nukva in order to build her, and Yesod shines in her according to the degree of perfection of the deeds of the lower creations. This applies to the governmental order. However, when the world was first created, Yesod built the Nukva without any existing deeds on the part of the lower creatures but rather through the power of the anticipated future deeds of the righteous. After the Nukva is built by Yesod, Zeir Anpin then turns to her to give her sustenance and blessing.)
Plain English: Answer: Zeir turns = giving sustenance; Yesod shines = building her. Shining of Yesod depends on deeds of lower creations. Yesod actually builds Malchut; influence of Zeir is plenty and blessing (not actual building) — comes after Malchut entirely built. Summary: At first Yesod shines in Nukva to build. Shines per degree of lower-creation deeds. At creation: Yesod built Nukva without existing deeds — through the power of anticipated future deeds of the righteous. After built: Zeir turns and sends sustenance and blessing.

Concepts: building_vs_sustenance, yesod_builds_nukva, mans_choice_gives_control, zivug_coupling.

Paragraph 15 — Six Directions did not turn (structure deficient)

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> And the Six Directions (Zeir Anpin) did not turn to Malchut, because they did not receive delight. Although Malchut too already existed as one of the Sefirot, she did not arouse favor and delight because her structure was still deficient. Plain English: Six Directions did not turnno delight received. Malchut existed but did not arouse favor and delightstructure still deficient.

Concepts: nukva, dejection_vs_brotherly_love, zeir_anpin_strict_judgment.

Paragraph 16 — Yesod came as MaH; Sefirot of MaH include Yesod radiating in Malchut

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> But when Yesod came in the mystery of MaH, she was then completed... For in the Sefirot of MaH it was included as part of the governmental order that Yesod should radiate in Malchut. We thus find that the governmental order is such that all the structures and worlds are in the category of Malchut as already rectified through Yesod (i.e. the exterior is united with the interior), and thus the building of Malchut is complete. For this is what causes all the openings and flows of influence. Plain English: When Yesod came as MaH: completed her. In the Sefirot of MaH, included in governmental order that Yesod should radiate in Malchut. All structures/worlds = Malchut already rectified through Yesod (exterior united with interior). Building of Malchut completecauses all openings and flows of influence.

Concepts: mah_expansion, mah_builds_ban, yesod_builds_nukva, tikkun_repair.

Paragraph 17 — Three months after (Genesis 38:24); AV/SaG/MaH join BaN

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> ...and she herself arouses delight in the male himself... The repair of BaN was so instituted that when the Nukva receives completion from the side of Yesod (MaH), the male (Zeir Anpin) immediately comes and joins with her, i.e. AV, SaG and MaH join with BaN in the mystery of "about three months after" (Genesis 38:24) as explained in the teachings of the ARI. This is the order of repair of the worlds at all times through the mystery of male and female. But the overall male is included entirely in MaH, and the Nukva – BaN – receives from MaH. Initially she receives the radiation of Yesod which completes her construction, after which she also receives the flow of sustenance and blessing. All the worlds were afterwards built in accordance with this rectified order. Plain English: Repair of BaN: when Nukva receives completion from Yesod (MaH), the male immediately joinsAV, SaG, MaH join BaN in the mystery of "about three months after" (Genesis 38:24, ARI). Order of repair at all times. Overall male included entirely in MaH; Nukva (BaN) receives from MaH: first the radiation of Yesod (completes construction), then flow of sustenance and blessing. All worlds built in this rectified order.

Concepts: three_months_later, mah_builds_ban, zivug_coupling, tikkun_repair, building_vs_sustenance.

Paragraph 18 — Repair = overall connection; general first, then detail

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> ...and this is the repair. The entire essence of the repair depends on this overall connection, for once it was brought about in the overall root of the governmental order, it came about detail by detail in the worlds themselves, as will be explained below. (The connection of MaH and BaN first came about generally, and afterwards in detail in each individual world.) Plain English: Repair depends on overall connection. Once brought about in the overall root, it came about detail by detail in worlds. Connection of MaH and BaN: generally first, then detail by detail in each world.

Concepts: mah_builds_ban, tikkun_repair, zivug_coupling.

Synthesis

Op. 58 closes the 288 Sparks unit (Op. 54-58) by resolving an apparent contradiction in Lurianic teaching about the Primordial Kings. Etz Chayim, Shaar Shevirat HaKelim ch. 8 (47a) says the Kings derive from Malchut/BaN and are therefore lacking repair. Etz Chayim, Derushey HaNekudot ch. 3 (37b) says it is the rule of Malchut that brings the repair. The resolution: the distinction is Malchut without the male (= deficient BaN, where Zeir has turned away — "Turn away your eyes from me", Song of Songs 6:5) vs. Malchut with the male (= rectified state, where Yesod has built her and Zeir has returned with blessing). The chapter's most beautiful image is the Moon-mystery: in herself, Malchut is "glass that does not shine"intrinsically dark. Through the Sun (= Zeir/Yesod), she becomes "beautiful as the moon" (Song of Songs 6:10); "the advantage of land is in everything" (Eccl. 5:8) — every flow into the world comes through Malchut, but Malchut herself receives all from the Sun. The Judgment-principle sets up the architecture: mitigated Judgment is the source of all joy (recipients deserve their reward; no bread of shame); unmitigated it is the source of all evil. Like fire (right heat = satisfaction; too hot = burns) and wine (moderate = joy; excess = intoxicates). Yesod's mission is to sweeten Malchut. The chapter's central operational distinction (¶13-14) is building vs. sustenance: Yesod builds Malchut to completeness; Zeir then turns and sends sustenance and blessing. They are not the same flow. Building depends on the deeds of the lower creations (Malchut is their root); but at creation, no deeds existed yet — so Yesod built her through the power of anticipated future deeds of the righteous. Once built, AV/SaG/MaH join BaN in the mystery of "about three months after" (Genesis 38:24, the Tamar verse, per the ARI). The connection of MaH and BaN — the operational form of the repair — first comes about generally, then detail by detail in each world. With this, the 288 Sparks unit closes, and the next unit (The World of Repair, Op. 59-69) will unfold the detail-by-detail joining of MaH and BaN through the entire structure of Atzilut.

Self-review notes

Looking ahead — grounded foreshadowing

Op. 58 closes the 288 Sparks unit with the moon-mystery: Malchut as glass-that-does-not-shine, beautiful through the Sun. Bread of shame; building (Yesod) vs. sustenance (Z"A turning); at creation Yesod built Nukva through the power of anticipated future deeds of the righteous; AV/SaG/MaH join BaN in the mystery of "about three months after" (Genesis 38:24) per ARI. Forecasts Op. 52.
