Section: The 288 Sparks (Openings 54–58)

TL;DR

This chapter opens the new section unit The 288 Sparks (Op. 54-58). After Op. 51-53 covered the first three Sefirot's role in the repair, this unit pivots to the operational machinery: the 288 sparks (Op. 36's רפ"ח sparks) and AV's role in keeping them — and through them, the broken vessels — in existence. Op. 54 first establishes what happened to the vessels in their broken state (Part 1), and the difference between the breaking and the repair (Part 2). Two parts: (Part 1) During the breaking, the power of government was taken from them. They did not stand arranged in complete form — various kinds of incomplete powers, unfitted to carry out any function. Two-meanings-that-are-one: (a) Sefirot = measures of all separate realms/beings; (b) Sefirot = laws of government themselves. So when broken: the creations are damaged (only bad parts rule, ability to do good lost) AND the laws of government are faulty (unable to accomplish anything). Breaking = two things together: (a) vessel unfit to do its work, (b) form/structure imperfect — one results from the other. Some breakage leaves a form fit for other work; great breakage leaves no form for any kind of work — and this was a great breakage. Vessels = governmental laws unable to execute any creative function (peulah shel the Four-Letter Name). Yet Four-Letter Names vechukim (creative powers and laws) did not cease to exist — they existed but could not function. (Part 2) Their source maintained them — the lights existed, the source maintained them, but in a state of disrepair. Until a new radiation came (cross-ref Op. 36's scattered sparks which kept the broken vessels in existence). Afterwards the Supreme Will wanted to complete the Form of Man in all its aspects → a new radiation came to complete them — the name of MaH (= new MaH). Mechanism: selection and purification — the name MaH sifted out and gathered to itself parts of BaN. Result: form and function = the state of existence as Partzufim (made afterwards through the mystery of rectification).

Chapter map

This chapter does two structural things: (a) opens the unit on the 288 sparks; (b) crisply distinguishes the broken-existence of the vessels from the new-radiation-MaH-driven repair that completes them.

What this chapter is doing — two parts

Part 1 — What the breaking actually was. Power of government taken; not arranged in complete form. Two-meanings-of-Sefirot: measures of separate beings + laws of government. Broken state means both: creations damaged + governmental laws faulty. Great breakage: no form for any work. Four-Letter Names vechukim existed but could not function.

Part 2 — The difference between breaking and repair. Source maintained vessels' existence in disrepair (= 288 scattered sparks). New radiation came = name of MaH. Mechanism: selection-and-purification — MaH sifts BaN. Form and function restored as Partzufim.

Paragraph 1 — Italic gloss

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> What happened to the vessels when they were broken. The difference between the breaking and the repair. Plain English: Theme: what happened to the vessels in the breaking + difference between the breaking and the repair.

Paragraph 2 — The proposition

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> During the time when the vessels were broken, the power of government was taken from them. They also did not stand arranged in a complete form. Rather, they were various kinds of incomplete powers that were unfitted to carry out any function. And their source maintained them in this state until a new radiation came that was to complete them and give them form and function. Plain English: Five claims: (1) power of government taken from them; (2) did not stand in complete form; (3) various kinds of incomplete powers, unfitted to carry out any function; (4) source maintained them; (5) new radiation came to complete them and give them form and function.

Paragraph 3 — Framing

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Having explained what happened when the vessels broke, we must now explain what happened thereafter. Plain English: Op. 36-50 = breaking. Now: what happened thereafter.

Paragraph 4 — Parts announcement

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> The proposition consists of two parts. Part 1: During the time when the vessels were broken... This explains in general terms what happened to the vessels during the time when they were broken. Part 2: And their source... This explains the difference between the breaking and the repair. Plain English: Two parts: (1) what happened in broken state; (2) difference between breaking and repair.

Paragraph 5 — Two meanings of "broken": creatures + governmental laws

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 1: During the time when the vessels were broken, the power of government was taken from them. The concept of being broken applies to things that are unfit to carry out their function. This has two meanings that are both really one. For as you have already heard, the Sefirot are the underlying measures of all that exists (i.e. of the separate realms and beings) and the Sefirot themselves are also the laws of government. In other words, it is the separate creations that are subject to the governmental order, while the Sefirot are the laws of the governmental order itself. Thus when one part holds sway over the creations, it results in one type of government, and when a different part holds sway, the result is a different type of government. Plain English: Broken = unfit to carry out function. Two meanings that are one: (a) Sefirot = measures of all existence (separate realms/beings); (b) Sefirot = laws of government themselves. Separate creations are subject to governmental order; Sefirot are the laws of that order. Different part holds sway → different type of government.

Concepts: sefirot_class, hanhagah_governmental_order, breaking_of_the_vessels.

Paragraph 6 — Unrectified-state calculation: damaged creations + faulty laws (Op. 37 cross-ref)

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Thus when the Supreme Mind made the calculation of how the creations would exist in an unrectified state, when strict Judgment is unmitigated, the consequence was quite evident: only defects could exist in these creations – the creations themselves were damaged. The creations then appeared as if they had lost their ability to carry out their good function, and only their bad parts ruled over them, causing damage to their intrinsic form. Corresponding to this state of destruction on the level of the creations, what we see above (on the level of the Sefirot in their broken state) is faulty laws of government that are unable to accomplish anything. This is the destruction and ruin explained earlier (see Opening 37, Part 1), which did not allow the good laws to operate, with corresponding effects on the creations. Plain English: Supreme Mind's unrectified-state calculation (when Judgment unmitigated): only defects in creations; creations themselves damaged; appeared to have lost their ability to do good; bad parts ruled. Above: faulty laws of government, unable to accomplish anything (= Op. 37 Part 1 destruction-and-ruin). Did not allow good laws to operate.

Paragraph 7 — Two parts of "breaking": unfit + imperfect form; great breakage = no form for any work

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> They also did not stand arranged in a complete form. Breaking means two things. It means that the vessel is unfit to carry out its work (the Sefirah does not have the power to govern), and also that its form or structure is imperfect. The one results from the other. It is because of the imperfection in its form that it is unfit for its work. Sometimes a thing can break in such a way that it retains a form fit for some other work. However, when the breakage is very great, it is left in no form for any kind of work. The breaking of the vessels was a breakage that left no form whatever, in the sense that the broken vessels were the measure of the creations when in a state of existence lacking all repair. In their broken state, the vessels themselves are governmental laws that are unable to execute any creative function (פעולה של הויה, peulah shel the Four-Letter Name). Plain English: Breaking = two things: (a) vessel unfit; (b) form/structure imperfect. One results from the other (imperfect form → unfit for work). Some breakage leaves form fit for other work. Great breakage: no form for any kind of work. The breaking of the vessels was this kind — left no form whatever. Vessels = governmental laws unable to execute any creative function (peulah shel the Four-Letter Name).

Concepts: breaking_of_the_vessels, peulah_shel_havayah, hanhagah_governmental_order.

Paragraph 8 — Four-Letter Names vechukim existed but could not function

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Rather, they were various kinds of incomplete powers that were unfitted to carry out any function. It is not that the creative powers and laws (הויות וחוקים, Four-Letter Names vechukim) ceased to exist. They existed, but they could not function in any way at all because of the great damage and destruction, which they could not escape. Thus they existed, but they lacked what they needed in order to be able to function. Plain English: Four-Letter Names vechukim (creative powers and laws) did not cease to exist. They existed but could not functiongreat damage and destruction. Existed but lacked what they needed to function.

Concepts: havayot_vechukim, havayot_forces_of_creation, breaking_of_the_vessels.

Paragraph 9 — Part 2: source maintained them; broken state until new radiation

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> Part 2: And their source maintained them in this state... For they did not cease to exist, which means that their source – the lights – were in existence, and the source maintained them in existence, except that it kept them in existence in a state of disrepair, and they were not repaired until the arrival of a new radiation, as it goes on to say. Plain English: They did not ceasetheir source-lights existed and maintained them. Source kept them in existence in a state of disrepair. Not repaired until new radiation came.

Concepts: vessels_kept_in_existence_by_source, new_radiation_mah, 288_sparks, breaking_of_the_vessels.

Paragraph 10 — New radiation = name of MaH; cross-ref Op. 36 Part 2

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> ...until a new radiation came... For this was only one state, as discussed earlier (see Opening 36 Part 2) in connection with the mystery of the scattered sparks (which kept the broken vessels in existence). Afterwards, the Supreme Will wanted to complete and perfect the Form of Man in all its aspects. It was then that a new radiation came to complete them, this being the name of MaH, as will be discussed later. Plain English: New radiation came. Op. 36 Part 2: scattered sparks kept broken vessels in existence. Afterwards: Supreme Will wanted to complete and perfect the Form of Man in all aspects → new radiation came = name of MaH.

Concepts: new_radiation_mah, new_mah, flashes_and_sparks, 288_sparks, dmut_adam.

Paragraph 11 — Mechanism: MaH sifts BaN; Partzufim form

Source — English (Greenbaum):

> ...that was to complete them... through giving them proper existence. This is the mystery of the selection and purification, whereby the name MaH sifted out and gathered to itself parts of BaN, as will be discussed later. ...and give them form and function. This is their state of existence as the Partzufim, which were made afterwards through the mystery of rectification, as will be discussed below. Plain English: Complete them = give proper existence. Mystery of selection and purification: MaH sifts and gathers to itself parts of BaN. Form and function = state of existence as Partzufim, made through mystery of rectification.

Concepts: new_mah, selection_and_cleansing, birurim_selection_purification, partzuf, tikkun_repair.

Synthesis

Op. 54 opens the new section unit The 288 Sparks (Op. 54-58) and serves a double structural function. First, it crisply states what the broken state actually was: the power of government was taken; the vessels did not stand in complete form; they were various kinds of incomplete powers, unfitted to carry out any function. The two-meanings-that-are-one of broken (¶5) is the chapter's most useful framing: Sefirot are both the measures of all separate beings (so broken Sefirot mean damaged creations) and the laws of governmental order (so broken Sefirot mean faulty laws unable to accomplish anything). These are not two facts but one fact described from creature-side and governance-side. Crucially: the creative powers and laws (Four-Letter Names vechukim) did not cease to exist — they existed but could not function in any way at all. Second, the chapter states the difference between the breaking and the repair: their source maintained them in their broken existence — the lights in their source did not cease, and kept the vessels in existence in a state of disrepair — until a new radiation came. This is the 288 scattered sparks of Op. 36 (which Op. 57 will return to in detail). Afterwards, the Supreme Will wanted to complete and perfect the Form of Man in all its aspects → a new radiation came to complete them: the name of MaH (= new MaH). The mechanism is selection and purification: the name MaH sifted out and gathered to itself parts of BaN — and the result is the Partzufim, the state of existence in form and function. The unit's pivotal teaching: between the breaking and the repair stands a suspended-existence state in which the source-lights are the only thing keeping the laws-and-measures from non-existence, and from which the new MaH lifts them into the Partzufim.

Self-review notes

Looking ahead — grounded foreshadowing

Op. 54 opens the 288 Sparks unit by stating what happened to the broken vessels: they existed but could not function; a new MaH radiation from AK's Forehead comes to complete them via selection-and-purification → Partzufim. Forecasts Op. 36, 37.
